First time out with Skinner sights
Re: First time out with Skinner sights
When I am shooting with peep sights the no line bifocals on my glasses have to be pushed down on my nose to see everything properly. I don' know but it might work for you.
Re: First time out with Skinner sights
Get rid of the ear muffs and go with ear plugs. That's what I use when rifle shooting. I always have some of the foam disposable ones on my shooting bag, but I also have a pair of custom made plugs. The hard plugs are really great for my AR-15 pistol that is very loud and they don't interfere with getting my cheek on any rifle.
As for a good sight picture I don't have a good suggestion. I had laser eye surgery 20 years ago to correct my distance vision. That worked well, but I had trouble seeing the sights. I found a pair of low power reading glasses that allowed me to see the sights, but the target was slightly out of focus. With practice I found seeing the target was not as important as seeing the sight, so I went with that. About 4 years ago my distance vision started to get worse, but now I could see the sights without the reading glasses. For distance my eye doctor prescribes a contact lens for just my right eye. When shooting I remove the contact lens to see the sights clearly.
Life's tough when you get old. You just got to work with what you got.

Re: First time out with Skinner sights
Very true. I use my muffs for handgun shooting and plugs for rifles. If the handgun is large caliber, then I have also used both. Plugs and muffs on top. I learned the hard way. I have bad Tinnitus.

I forgot to mention in the post about my eyes that I will be 74 this June so I don't look through young eyes.
Re: First time out with Skinner sights
I stopped beating myself up for such a piss poor showing at the range. Looked at it logically, it was the first time I shot it in 5 years since I moved to NC. In those 5 years 3 of them was balting the big C. The Henry was the first and only rifle I ever owned. My thing was pistols and shotguns was on a Trap Team for 9 years in NJ. So the way I'm looking at it is, first time in 5 years with new sights at 30 yards I still hit the target! Guaranteed next range report will be better.
I appreciate all the helpful info you guys gave me.

Getting out of the house to go shooting is a great therapy. I highly recommend it. I wouldn't worry about accuracy yet, because as you know it will get better, and the beauty of practicing is the best part. Have fun, and enjoy the rifle.
