First time out with Skinner sights

Post by Nam Vet » Sun Feb 13, 2022 7:01 pm

Finally got the OK from my lovely wife to go to the range. :D It would be the first time out with my Golden Boy Tribute 22LR with Skinner sights. Getting used to the new sights took awhile especially with trifocals, my head felt like a bobble head doll. that was problem #1,#2 was shouldering my rifle with earmuffs on. Just could not get a handle on on it.
Does anyone else have that problem? Any suggestions would be of great help.
Had a new target out to 30 yards but this was the best I could do. Pretty poor for a rifle with new sights. Have done better at that distance with the original sights. Guess I need more practice or new glasses and different ear protection.

Yeah, go with ear plug type. Check out Hickok 45. They are quite adequate.

Getting out and shooting is good. As I have come to believe, there is room for improvement in everything that I do. Justing wondering, are you shooting from a bench or standing? Also, I typically follow the 4 fundamentals when shooting. Most times for me, it is a matter of sticking to the basics. But as you pointed out, practice makes perfect.

Have the same problem with earmuffs, just can't use them with rifles. Tend to prefer plugs anyway, & they usually give better protection.
Glasses are tricky, though mine are bifocal rather than trifocal. Went with progressives, which helped, but on my latest pair I asked them to start the "transition" a bit lower on the lenses, which really helped with sharpening the front sights on rifles. Have to tilt my head juuusst a bit up with my handguns, a compromise I'm willing to live with.

Have any of you had cataracts surgery? When I had both eyes done a few years ago I could not believe the change. A lot of the time I can read without reading glasses and now I can focus on both iron sites and the target. Just a thought that maybe will help a fellow shooter.

Just a thought, try shooting from a bench, if possible. It may help narrow down what could be influencing your point of impact.

There is a new pair of shooting glasses out that have the magnifier moved up to center. I will see if I can find the link. Or you could try just a pair of reader glasses. When shooting rifles I use those orange colored band ear plugs like Hickok 45.

Check out the SSP shooting glasses with top focal lense. I just ordered the 1.75 setup.

I am like many others - rifles and ear muffs don't mix.
