.45 ACP Range report....

Post by fortyshooter » Mon Aug 24, 2020 3:35 pm

Made a trip to the range this morning to shoot my .45 ACP HiPoint Carbine and my CCW .45 ACP Springfield XDE.

First I had to give the secret password to Deadwood Jr. to let me enter the range shack

So first up was the HP Carbine shooting my 230 gr. Plated Xterme Bullets loaded with 6.0 of Unique. Ol Deadwood Jr. was about 30 yds. out holding the target. Shooting from standing position the EOtech sight looked to be zeroed in close enough from last time I had it out. Also had fun hitting the swinging plate rack on the other range and hitting the tombstone gong from 80 yds. No feeding or ejection issues so far with the Hipoint and it can be a fun plinker or a serious SD carbine and reliable with the EOTech sight setup.

Then I put up a fresh target for some function and training shots with the Springfield XDE which I carry most of the time.
Ammo was what I carry being the 250 gr. XTP bullet loaded with 6.3 Unique which is a nice accurate load with some punch.
Target distance was typical 15-20 ft combat distance pulling pistol quickly from left rear pocket and using two hand grip...shooting left handed.
6 shots fired total.... three quick shots followed by a pause and three more. First 3 shots was group to upper right. Nice shooter the XDE is with no feed or ejection issues.

So was a nice for August day to get out with light wind blowing and 82 degrees and a bit humid to get out and shoot!

Nice work, forty and with one of my favorite cartridges, especially in a 1911. Oh, we have 1911s in 9mm, but 9mm just isn't a 45. :)

Nice shooting forty. The .45acp is something I really want to try in my Pietta .45 Colt. That extra cylinder is gonna make me a happy camper. Hopefully!

Thank you for a very interesting post. How hard is it to find all of your brass after shooting the carbine? I assume that you load your own cartridges.

I love the 45 acp because of the 1911 but I got to admit, that bullet launcher is pretty neat. Good shooting. Looks like you had a good fun day.

I use the Caldwell Brass Catcher bag. I made a custom attachment plate for it that allows me to use it on my 3 Henry lever rifles and the HiPoint.
Works really well! Brass bag in action on the HiPoint. https://youtu.be/U1wPRp-C7rg

You know I use to worry about finding all my brass when shooting those brass slingers. But anymore I just find what I can and dont worry about any that mother earth swallows up. It got to be so that I would spend more time trying to find every last piece and it just ruined the fun of shooting. Brass isnt that expensive especially 45 acp and 40 S&W.

There was a thread on one of the other lever rifle forums about how many times .45 A.C.P. brass could be reloaded. The consensus of opinion was that it could be " put through the wringer" many many times with a very few exceptions .

Well not for all brands. I have had several pieces of Winchester brass that may have been from shelf ammo that I found with a split in the side.

But back to the bag...It was cheap and easy for me to modify and I can shoot without any bother of having to pick up the brass when shooting those guns. I don't bother with SW .40, 9mm or 5.56. My Mini-14 throws them over into the next acre!!
