January 25th, 1860

Post by RanchRoper » Sat Jan 25, 2020 5:41 pm

Didn't make it to the ranch roping practice today, but I did get to the range. No wind so I got a chance to do some long range shooting with my 1860 Henry 45 Colt. Shooting 200 gr LRNFP and 7.0 gn Universal. I really like this load and it is very consistent in the way it shoots.

Warmed up at 50 yds, off hand standing, open sights, odd number of rounds on some of the targets today because I also blew up some pop cans. Give 'em a good shake and KABOOM. That'll teach Blackberry Ginger ale to hang out at the back of my fridge...

Next is 100 yds, ladder sight up but the slider on the bottom. That's a 12" target that I am pretty happy with for sure. Rifle just got cleaned too, so I think that really helps with accuracy.

Next is 200 yds, I just took the cardboard out of the target package so I could have a clear view with my little binoculars....got it dialed in not too bad, that is a long way out with open sights. I had the ladder up and the slider up into the 200 yd range. The first couple were pretty much in the center, then they started spreading out on me, and by the last couple of rounds I was back near center. Anyhow, for a 200 gr lead bullet, no superstar in the aerodynamics dept, I was happy just to get them on the paper. It would be interesting to know the force of impact at that range. They went through the wood backboard still. Scrappy little rounds! :D

Still drink Shasta grape or root beer at times. The tongue especially enjoys the bubble zing of that brand.

Really like the bottom two 50-yard targets in your first photo. Solid POIs, RR!
Glad you got in some "calm" range time today. ;)

Plus one. That 50 yard target is a wall hanger. Not sure how you hang that blackberry ginger ale on a wall, but that had to be fun. Enjoyed your report, as always.

200 yds. with open sights...that is fantastic shooting! Sometimes I pick up those off brand 2 liters when on sale. They make great targets
even with a .22 !

For 100+ yds I use binoculars to check each shot. Ladder sight is tricky. Easy to send lead way over the target.
