PT7 -- H012MAW & SeeAll MK-1 Sight-in session

Post by PT7 » Mon Feb 04, 2019 3:29 pm

Connected with ESquared this morning at the FJ indoor range near him. We both planned to do some sight-in work with new Henrys. The 50-yards maximum is just the right distance to sight in my .357 All-Weather rifle. First time shooting it with the SeeAll MK-1 Open Sight mounted on it.
DSCN3026.JPG
Stance: At the inverted 10"- sided triangle shown below, shot off hand standing, 40 yards.
Ammo: Fiocchi .357 158gr JHP.

Getting on paper target. First, I started out using an 8" B-C black circle splash target, shooting off a bench rest
(Yup, I faced my nemesis & arch-enemy --- the bench rest --- once again!). Distance set at 25 yards.

No photos because I had quite a challenging time finding paper. Kept on adjusting the MK-1, but they caution the user on the number of revolutions to turn both windage and elevation screws. So I proceeded slowly.

Found paper. Still took quite a few more rounds to adjust in both windage and elevation. ESquared suggested I move out to 40 yards since the bullet trajectory would still rise some. We both shot some rounds, and finally came nearer to a decent POI. Still some fine-tuning for both directions is needed. I plan to do that at my son's-in-law outdoor shooting range, and ask him to double-check my settings.

Dumped the Nemesis! After too many rounds to adjust, as usual, I quit the bench rest and shot off-handing standing. The ten POIs you see here (4/10 in the triangle) were shot at 40 yards. And I also shot fairly rapidly....got into a little smooth lever-action rhythm (per Esquared). ;)
Sight-in MAW at 40 yards_3047.JPG
Finishing up. As I noted, the sight-in today was somewhat challenging. But there are days like that. The end of it wasn't not really a flop; just have to work a little more on fine-tuning the sight. BTW, it really is a great sight for me and my eyes. And the new Henry AW .357 is solid, and operated okay. The operator caused some FTFs, which means more practice and range time! :)

Couple Comments on ESquared's BBB .45 Colt Carbine. Sure is a beautiful Carbine; I especially like the great wood it carries on its stock. And ESquared knows how to get that Renaissance Wax to make the wood really shine! I shot two rounds, and notice how light the recoil is. A pleasure (thanks ESquared -- that was fun). Being a bronze BB, there isn't a rubber recoil pad. For me, the pad isn't needed. Let that bronze butt plate shine, too.

Thanks for lookin'. Have a good week ahead, Everybody.

Is the SeeAll sight the only option you tried other than the oem sights? I also have an All Weather in 357 and I had a very difficult time seeing the oem sights. I now have a set of Tru Glo sights mounted. I've only been to the range with the Tru Glo sights once. They were much better than the oem sights but I still had a hard time seeing and positioning the front sight consistently.

Thank you for your post.

Mark, you're welcome.

There is a quite long list of other sight options I've tried. That would bore you, and most are documented within different Forum threads I've posted. Easier to state it this way, although I don't fully understand the dynamic function of the SeeAll MK-1 Open Sight. What has immensely helped me is that I no longer have to deal with a front sight.

Here are some links, if you're interested in researching this sight.

https://seeallopensight.com/

On pages 4-5 of the owner's manual, they explain how the sight works:
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2114/ ... manual.pdf

In the general comments on their web site, this really piqued my interest (bold is mine):
No Parallax: Unlike other sights, where you see the reticle is where your round will hit. Regardless of your angle or eye position you'll hit where you aim.
There are other web articles, videos, and evaluations available, too.

Bottom line for me, this sight works well. Wish I had found it sooner. For my All-Weather .357 BB, I only have to minimally tweak my sight-in adjusts, and I'll be good to go. Yeah, sighting a rifle has always been a real challenge, too. I shoot better off hand than when using a bench rest. So I'll get some help on the fine-tuning for windage and elevation.

My bottom-line suggestion is to research this sight. If then interested, the less-than-$100 price tag (mine sold for $65 on amazon) is not a huge loss if it doesn't work out. It might surprise you just as it did for me.

I looked at that sight right after you posted about it the first time PT it looks like there is a learning curve to using it for sure. Id be tempted to cave and do the red dot sight. But thats just me.

Exactly correct, Al. There is always a learning curve with new things. I must admit that with all the eye challenges I have had, there were some butterflies rummaging around as I handled several new things: a brand new Henry rifle, a new type fiber optic sight, and using the new-to-me inverted triangle for the sight-in target. But POIs are there....an OK start! :D

For me, I looked at this as my "last chance" to have a deer-hunting rifle in .357 Magnum. I'll fine-tune that sight, and get some practice at the range this spring/summer. Just maybe, I'll be in a deer blind next winter. That would be something else to harvest my first whitetail.

Stay after it PT and I know you will be there. My hats off to you for giving it another shot. Maybe I will get a chance to see one in a shop that would be the best way for me to understand one.

That's an interesting sight you have there PT7. I have always found the best way to sight in a Henry is to use a gun rest (i.e. Caldwell Led Sled) - it takes away nearly all the human error when shooting at paper targets and gets you to the bulls-eye in the fewest amount of shots...

I tried the See All on a Ruger 10/22 and decided it wasn't for me. The makers of the sight are great to work with and admitted it is not for everyone. They gladly refunded my money and I ended up with a scope.
I hope you get it dialed in to your satisfaction.

Ozarkhunter, appreciate your comments.
Agreed, the SeeAll is not for everyone. That is why there are hundreds of optic choices out there. I'm just glad I can use it, and I'm certain I'll get it sighted in as soon as the weather permits me to get to the range. I hope your scope choice works fine for you.

But I'm also glad to hear that "the makers of the sight are great to work with..." Great to know there is good CS there, if needed. I do plan to contact them because I've found that the very, very small Allen wrench needed for windage and elevation adjusts could be easily lost. I'd like to get a backup to add to my gunsmith tools.

I bought a SeeAll rail model, since my eyes are getting so crummy I just can’t use regular iron sights anymore. I put it on my 22/45 and was a very unhappy camper. At arms length the sight picture is just plain bad and very hard to align. I really disliked how the bottom of the sight completely obscures the bottom half of the target. Oh well.

I plan to try it on my 10/22 Takedown. Hopefully a solid cheek weld and the much closer positioning of the sight picture will make it usable. I am not really hopeful but I would like it to work. The concept is sound.

Thanks very much for the range review.

John,

You're welcome for the range review. Understood stood about the eye challenges....sorry you're facing that, too.

I'd like to find out how/where you mounted the SeeAll on your 22/45? You said "At arms length the sight picture is just plain bad and very hard to align." The arms length is why I ask. A photo would be helpful, if you'd post one.

How close is the sight mounted to your hammer? The rear of my sight is 1-1/4" from the front of the de-cocked hammer, and I get a pretty solid and close-on cheek weld. I can quickly and easily acquire the sight coming up from under the target.

However, again as I said, "the SeeAll is not for everyone." It's just a good thing there are so many choices out there for everyone, both iron and optics. When I first tested this different sight configuration, I was really hoping I wouldn't end up being an "unhappy camper." So far, I'm doing okay with it.

I'll look for a photo, if you want me to compare yours with my mounting position, etc. Take care.

PT7 I think you are a little hazy about what I wrote. I tried the sight on my 22/45 pistol, on a Picatinney rail, and when I held it out at normal shooting distance the sight would just not work. I agree that having it up close on a long gun with a consistent cheek weld will be a better setup. I just can’t get it to work on a handgun.

Duh. Not hazy, John, just wrong on your pistol thinking it was a rifle! Now I understand the much longer distance from eye to sight. Thanks for checking me on that.

Think you are correct that it would be probably much harder to acquire a target with a handgun. I "practiced" looking through my SeeAll by holding it in my hand before I even mounted it on my Big Boy. Unless I brought the sight really close in, it was hard for me to get a good sight picture.

I'll be interested what you find when you mount it on your Ruger 10/22 Takedown. I hope it works better for you on that.
