May 15th 45 Colt at the range

Post by RanchRoper » Sun May 15, 2016 3:31 pm

Beautiful sunny day with slight breeze. Shot Winchester 250gr LFN. All shots off hand standing. 25 yd all rapid fire. Not the best. I was ok with the 50 yd today. I had 3 rounds leftover so I adjusted my sight and shot 100 yds. All 3 on paper remarkably, as it's far enough away that it's always kind of a crap shoot, pun intended. Rifle performed great as usual. Met some new guys there, and they had a chance to drool over my Henry. But not on it. :) I wrote on the targets so you know which is which. That 'ol barrel heats up pretty good when you go all Chuck Connors! Good fun!!!

Appreciate it, thanks. But I'll sure try not to bet the ranch on any 100 yd shots!

Thanks for the report, RanchRoper. I also shoot one round after the other; ten rounds in about a minute. And, you're right, the barrel gets smokin' hot! I alternate the rifle with the revolver to let each of them cool a bit. Nice shooting! The fifty yard target is great.

Good shooting in fresh air!
I envy you, currently I shoot at a 25 yard indoor range.
And that is great shooting off hand. Just being able to see that size target at 100 yards is an accomplishment. Hitting it is icing on the cake.
Load on Sunday and Shoot all Week.......okay it's a Mare's Leg I will reload on Wednesday. ;)

"Alberta man shoots friends at range. A representative from the RCMP said the man will not be charged, as the shootings were justified. Reportedly, the man's "friends" drooled on his Henry rifle."

Sounds plausible to me. :)

Took a ride today too. I moved my rifle to the other side (pics attached). I mount from the left and it was cumbersome there. I also raised the angle so I can draw it from the scabbard easily with my right hand as I dismount on the left side. Seems to be more practical.

The whole set-up is really attractive. That's a nice looking saddle blanket too.

I was thinking about the ammo I've shot so far and I think the Winchester 250 gr LFN shoots the most accurate. The others were Federal JSP and Hornady Cowboy Action 255 gr. Also the rifle seems to really like the Winchester. Cycles nicer than the others. I have not shot other ammo but do you guys generally find what you like and just stick with it? Other than the re-loaders who load to a spec they like.

That is really good shooting RR, IMHO......

Sometimes I get used to shooting from a rest and FORGET, just how hard it is to get a pattern like that at 50yds offhand.

Same for the 100 yd group; they're actually centered............OMG :o

Again, that is just plain, everyday good practical shooting.

BTW, your's are the only images I can see :D

Don't know how I missed this thread till now. You did great offhand shooting. Aren't all horses left-hand drive? 8-)

You know the thing I see in those targets is, every single shot was a kill.

And isn't that really what it's all about?
