Brass Carbine 45 Mods

Got the Skinner Express w/ Brass insert, dovetail filler (with extra reticle holder) and Lyman Globe installed, along with Brass Stacker lever wrap (probably the hardest install of all of them). For now, put in a Shaver insert, but we'll see how it goes when I sight it in tomorrow at the range!

I am curious about how the globe front sight does. Is this ever considered a hunting sight?

My low pro works so well with the front blade that I am hesitant to mess with it.

Now hunting season is done, maybe a more target oriented sight is in order.

Thanks, man! In my opinion, the globe sight is better for everything than the front blade, including hunting and especially at longer distances. My experience with the front blade/bead was that it began to completely cover up the bullseye at anything much beyond 25 yds or so. The Peep/Globe set up is much more flexible, as it comes from Lyman with about 8 inserts (as I recall), but I found (thanks to the experts here) the Lee Shaver inserts, which fit the same way but are much more finely detailed.

I've never used the one I have in the pic, but it seems like it would enable you to really SEE the bull at greater distances, as opposed to almost any post-type front sight, but I'll find out tomorrow. There are enough inserts out there that you can tailor it to your needs, the distance, the size of the target, etc. Here's another Shaver insert, that I put on my Small Game Carbine. Super-fine post, and works great for 22LR type distances (at least for me).

This is the original Henry brass bead front sight. Minus the bead, filed off. The blade measures approx 1/16". The lower aspect lines up perfectly with the low pro mounted at the rear of my scope rail.

Being used to this minimal front involvement, is what raises the question about the globe. I feel that I will find the globe to be excessive.

I know, I am going to have to try it and see.

Theoretically this is true - and I have been considering one myself and your results will influence my decision.
Kinda sorta like the sight hoods that were included on later Mod 94 Winchesters and Marlins. I think the shading of the front sight has an advantage.

Here's a pic of my first outing with my LoPro and Lyman front globe when it was on my BBS 357. Only 25 yds, but it was seated. off of a "shoot stick/monopod with a "Y" type yoke; but at least you can get the idea. As you can see on the target notes, I moved to a better-lit pistol range, as the rifle range lighting isn't great.

Wasn't aware you had filed off your bead. If you've got that dialed in with your LoPro, don't let me talk you out of it! The Lymans aren't that expensive, so might be worth a try.

For the first one, click on the "Reply with quote" button.
Then I open a second window to the Forum. Find the second quote in the other thread, again click on the "Reply with quote" button, copy that, and insert into my reply with first quote.

That's it....hope that's clear.

I do as PT7 when the quote I want is in another topic.

If the quote I want is in the same topic...
o Click Reply with quote button. Copy that (Windows: cntrl-A, followed by cntrl-C).
o Click Browser 'Back' button.
o Find the second quote, again click on the "Reply with quote" button.
o Place the cursor where I want the first quote to appear and 'paste' (Windows: cntrl-V)
