What ammo does your Henry 22 like?
I have two Henry 22s. A H003t pump and a H001 classic. Both of them like CCI std. vel. for paper and Mini Mag hp for varmints and plinking. Aguila also works well both hv and std velocity.
Re: What ammo does your Henry 22 like?
ummm, I don't have a Henry .22, but my Rossi likes both CCI std and mini Mag as well.

Alongside any number of Henry Folk, my SGC .22LR shoots well with the CCI Standards.
One other manufacturer that also does real well in this rifle is Browning Performance Rimfire (BPR) 40gr RN. Shot about 400 rounds so far, and have a good stash left. I've shot a lot of paper targets with it, but really enjoy clanging the black steel targets!
Here is the Browning web description. Toward the bottom of the page, click on the "Details" link and you'll get the bullet specs. http://browningammo.com/ammo-detail.htm ... ory=Target

I use SK Standard Plus in all of my .22's, including my target rifles. It's very accurate and very predictable, with very few - if any - fliers. We don't really have the facilities here for plinking, so most shooting is at paper.
Re: What ammo does your Henry 22 like?
Hey, Les,
Since I've not used SK before (didn't ever hear of it), I just checked out your ammo at a couple of shops, one in Ohio, and the other here in MO. I was a little surprised that your ammo cost spread was 9.5 cents --- 13 cents per round. Seemed a little high. But then I looked at the SK specs and learned it's a match grade sporter ammo made by Lapua, and often used in competition. Also there were a lot of evals rating this ammo very highly; the MO shop received 71 reviews with 98% of the folk providing a high recommendation for using SK. I figured then it's not that expensive since it's designed to perform as match grade ammunition. Whenever I get to the day I need to get some more .22LR, I may try your ammo choice.
Looks like you're using some good stuff!

Re: What ammo does your Henry 22 like?
Yes, it certainly is good stuff. I used to use Eley Match for competitions, but the SK is half the price and just as good, so it was a no-brainer. It also made sense to me to use it in all my other .22's; the reason being that if the rounds aren't going where they should, then it's probably down to me, and not the ammo.PT7 wrote:Hey, Les,

That's the theory, anyway!

My 24" likes CCI Standard Vel. My 20" .22 Magnum likes CCI Total Metal Jacket. I did try Hornady Critical Defense in the mag - keyholes before they went 10 yards...I suspect the twist rate is wrong for that bullet.

Re: What ammo does your Henry 22 like?
Most .22LR ammo will give you a 3” group at 50 yards. Standard velocity will take an inch off that and finding a particular ammo your rifle likes will bring it down another inch to 1”.
To get smaller than an inch I use the European stuff with the lube. Norma, SK, RWS and other’s.

I recently bought a scope for my H001 and hope to put together a report on how the various ammo shoots in "MY" H001. I've got most of the popular .22 ammo here, including various shorts, etc.
I personally only shoot CCI SV/Quiets (100% backyard). I havent been to a range in years

Re: What ammo does your Henry 22 like?
I just started my 10 day “waiting period” to pick up my new classic lever action carbine. I live in the great state of “Kalifornistan” and we now can only hunt with non lead bullets so I guess my answer has to be”copper bullets”. We can still use lead to target practice so I’ll use up the many rounds of whatever I have till then. The “big panic seems to have started already here and there are no copper 22s available anywhere right now that I can find. Even then our choices of flavor will be limited. When I said use them up I DID mean for target practice.

Even so I understand some of them might not ship to “Kalifornistan”

Re: What ammo does your Henry 22 like?
I have some of the cheapest I could get. POI from my Rossi was all over the place. Mistakenly thought it was a problem with the rifle. A piece of the rationale (excuse) for buying my Henry .30-30. After being on this forum for a while, from reading the .22 stories, realized it wasn't the Rossi at all. It was the ammo. Two good takeaways. Don't fall for the cheapest .22 ammo. Got my first Henry!

Re: What ammo does your Henry 22 like?
Thanks for the good advice, Mags. Two questions. What was the cheapest 22LR that you have used and that failed to perform in your Rossi? What 22LR ammo do you now use that you find is better? Thanks.Mags wrote:I have some of the cheapest I could get. POI from my Rossi was all over the place. ... Don't fall for the cheapest .22 ammo.

Re: What ammo does your Henry 22 like?
I've since gone back to CCI Mini Mag Hollow Pt. The bulk cheap stuff I bought years ago I used it to refill empty CCI bricks and didn't keep the bulk packaging it came in, so I do not remember what it was. At the time my thinking was that all .22 ammo was the same.
Back in the 90's I shot my first nutria with the Rossi and CCI Mini Mags. It was about a 150yd shot over the buckhorn sights (before my eyes went bad). The Rossi and ammo shot straight and true. POA was POI.
After the original CCI bricks ran out I was turned off from shooting much. With the bulk ammo it was hard to hit a nutria at any distance. It became worse as my eyesight went south. My Henry .30-30 experience gave me back confidence and fun in my shooting ability. Reading .22 stories here taught me that my bad experience with the Rossi wasn't likely the Rossi but the ammo.
I have a lot of the bulk ammo left. Most recently shot a bunch of it out of my .22 S&W revolver. I'm still amazed to see shots with this bulk ammo spin off to the left or right and plow into the dirt half way to the target well off line of POA.

Re: What ammo does your Henry 22 like?
CCI Std Vel for me. Priced right and is equal to the high priced stuff.
Have found that Winchester Suppressor ammo shoots the same point of impact at 100 yards - not important unless you shoot Lever Action Silhouette and need the 45gr bullet to take a heavy ram at 100 yards. Works OK locally, may not work as well at the Nationals, In Raton, but I like the idea of shooting .22 LR at the Pistol Cartridge targets.
