New SS 357, get it tomorrow!

Post by Brother_Love » Fri Jan 04, 2019 3:53 pm

Ive been searching for one of these for a while and a friend tipped me about one 2 hours south. I’m going to get it tomorrow. It has a nice piece of wood on it too. It probably will be a 357 maximum within a week.

What is the process to make it into a 'maximum '?
Remember, it's not how many guns you have. It's how many bullets you have.

I have 2 choices, send it my gunsmith or try it myself. I have researched the process and it can be done with a finishing reamer, lots of oil and patience. It can be hand turned. Both of the ones I followed turned out great. I may chicken out though and send it to my gunsmith. Ill shoot it as is for a little while.

Please forgive my ignorance, but what does it mean to make it into a "357 maximum"? What will be the benefit over it's current configuration?

Even after the explanation about the "finishing reamer and lots of oil," I'm still not clear about what 'smithing is about to take place, no matter who does it. Please elaborate if you get a chance.

Regardless of whether it ends up being "Maxed Out" or not, that's some beautiful furniture!

Congrats in advance and keep us posted on your first impressions, the mystery mods and how it all turns out!

I’m going to let my gunsmith do it. He is simply going to rechamber it for357 maximum. It will give me a little more power plus I just want one. Thanks

Thanks for the clarification. Not familiar with that load, but a quick search on AmmoSeek shows that round to be fairly rare and spendy. Do you reload for it?

It may or may not matter to you, but I'd guess that kind of modification will void your warranty. Others may prove me wrong (they'll chime in if so).

Yes, I reload and I have lots of brass on hand. Yes, I have voided the warranty on 2 Tikkas and a Mossberg by having them re-bored and rechambered. It is a price that I’m willing to pay to get the calibers I want.
Thank you

I've had 3 Henry .357 magnums, but none had the beautiful wood grain patterns like the one you showed us. Really nice, and two thumbs up on that great-looking stock! Congrats & enjoy.

Interesting thread, BL. Along with the others, I've not heard about .357 maximum before. Always happens on our Forum that I keep on learning new things.

Thanks for your post.

357 max is just an extended 357 case for the most part. Ruger did a blackhawk in one but they discontinued them sometime back. They were notorious for cutting of the top strap. Dan Wesson also chambered it in there revolver. The Dan Wesson was quite popular and they sold for quite a bit of money. There were alot of folks with contenders who also had barrels made into that caliber. My son in law has one and I did as well but sold all of my contender stuff sometime ago. With the longer case it opens it up to heavier and different styles of bullets making it a great deer gun in the states that only allow straight wall cases. Mike Bellem is gunsmith who has really taken the max and increased its popularity by the work he has done and continues to do with the cartridge. I understand from reading you can now buy a Henry from his son and he will send it to Mike for rechambering to the max and then the gun can be shipped to your FFL. I like the max and still have some brass for it for the son in law. Maybe someday I will do the same but for right now Im ok where Im at. I have taken a picture to show people who havent seen one before the difference. The pic shows a 38 special 357 Mag and then the max. Another thing I might also add is this cartridge was real popular in shooting silly wets.

Impressive...didn't know that was possible. I don't reload, so wondering where you get the brass for it, assuming you can't buy factory loads. :?:
