Oh, that is cool! I'd have a hard time choosing between 223 and 308. Definitely a cool offering!

I have more .223 rounds than 308 so that was a factor.

Several things lead in favor of the .223 if you are not hunting not the least of which is available ammo (handloading pretty well takes care of this), cheaper to shoot, lack of recoil, quieter, & several others. Plus you said you have more ammo for it, it's an exellent varmint ctg. & will usually give 1/2" groups in a good rifle. Oh yes then there's the fun, the .223 is a VERY fun cartridge to shoot.
Congratulations again & please give us a range report, I'm probably not the only one who,s anxious to hear how the new Henry shoots.

From what I can tell Henry hasn't even shipped the first batch.

The pictures I've seen indicate no sights on the Long Ranger. I imagine Henry assumes everyone will put scopes them. If in had one, though, I think I'd prefer iron sights. A brass bead on the front, and a tang sight on the rear.

ditto1958 the picture I saw showed no sights either. I have a friend who has put sights on a bbl using accraglass gel bedding compound, he says it won't come off. Then you could use the existing screw holes for a receiver sight (peep) if you wanted both irons & a scope you could put a leaf rear sight on the bbl. Heck what I'd do is email Henry & ask it they'd cut dovetails & put iron sights on it. Worst they can say is no & I'm kind of thinking they just might do it for a customer who requested them.

They built it like what others call an "American". I suspect they will start making variances on it once its in full production.

That is a nice rifle they remind me of he Browning BLR.
The .223 is a very accurate cartridge. Congratulations.

Guess I'm old school, I kind of like sights on a hunting rifle for backup.
I have a friend who builds a lot of rifles & he's told me he has put sights on a bbl using accuraglass gel & even sling swivels & never had one come off.

I've heard that JB Weld epoxy works good if you decide you need a front sight.

excellent choice .... I really like my new Henry 44 and 45-70 but our Browning Lever Action (BLR) 308 that we've been using since the 1970's is still my favorite lever action rifle .... 308 is a very versatile caliber .... it can be used for long range, precision shooting or pump 220 grain bullets into big game for woods hunting ....

when we ordered our Henry 44 and 45-70 we considered them to be 100 yard rifles .... we like Nikon scopes and were surprised to find that in their top line they no longer make a 3 - 9 .... it has apparently been replaced by a 4 - 12 .... therefore we made the decision to take the early '80's vintage Nikons off of our BLR 308 and Remington 700 30-06 and put them on the Henrys .... the new 4 - 12's have been mounted and bore sighted but not sighted in .... we need to do that, hopefully things will settle down in the next few weeks to where we can do so

there are several really good companies out there .... some folks favor a Ford, some a Chevy .... both will get you to the grocery store .... in just a quick count I know of 12 rifles in our family's collection that have Nikons on them .... most were mounted decades ago and all are still crystal clear .... some have stood up to years of strong recoil (the one on our 300 WBY Mag comes to mind) and I don't remember the last time we had to readjust one .... for us, they have proven themselves

The .308 is a fantastic cartridge! Got my Elk this year with one.
