Cowgirl Corner: 1911 Long Slide

Post by North Country Gal » Sat Mar 10, 2018 6:12 pm

Shot this one, today, too, but thought I would post it, separately, from the 223 post.

This is another gun we picked up over the winter to fill a hole in our 1911 collection. While we do have a couple of target 1911s in 9mm, we were lacking in a full blown target 1911 in 45 auto. Walked into our favorite LGS about a month, ago, just as they were putting this new Kimber 1911 on display and figured this would do the job. It's a Stainless Kimber Target L.S. (long slide).

It's actually just what I wanted in a target 1911 in that it is very basic as far as bells and whistles - no ambi safety, no front slide serrations, no firing pin safety and a standard length guide rod instead of a full length. What it does have that any target grade 1911 should have is on board and ready to go - match barrel, great sights, very nice trigger that breaks at a beautifully crisp 4 pounds, great feel and balance and no discernible play anywhere in the fit of parts.

Now for that L.S. or long slide part. A long slide 1911 is a 1911 with a 6" barrel instead of the 5' barrel on the standard full size Government 1911. That longer barrel is, indeed, a real plus for target work. Gets you a longer sighting radius and, especially, more weight out at the muzzle for a more target like balance. Pick this Kimber up and it just begs to be shot. Also adds some fps, too, over a 5" barrel, but not a big factor for my use. Also, as I quickly discovered, that extra weight out at the muzzle makes for a very tame 1911 for follow up shots.

Our usual 25 yard pistol station was occupied, so just moved over to a shorter 15 yard station and went to work. I made no attempt to sight in the gun. That will come, later. Today was all about getting to know the gun. Just loaded this Kimber Target L.S. and went to work. 3" bulls, as usual.

So, here we have another band new target grade 1911 in 45 auto with great fit, finish, reliability and super accuracy at a surprisingly affordable price (under 1K). Right out t of the box, it scores 100% for function and an A for accuracy. Can't wait for warmer weather to see what this beauty will do from at 50 yards.

Not too shabby looking, either. :)

to see what this beauty will do from at 50 yards.
50 ?? - stretch it to 100 and see what you can do - find an old 5 gal LP tank and see if you can ring it at 100! (it's not that tough with an accurate 1911)

Oh, yeah, 100 is in the plan. Just need to see some bare ground before toying that. Lots of snow, here yet.

Kimber's are very nice. If I didn't already have my collection of Sig's I'd get one.
