Youth entry rifle opinions...

I have a 10 year old granddaughter that is showing some interest in shooting. I know there are videos on various youth models, but would rather hear from members that have already been down this road. Looking for something in a .22 rifle. I like the lever action Henry youth model, I just don't know how well she would get along with it. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated. I'm sure I'm not the first Grandpa that has been down this trail...lol

Don't be in too much of a hurry to go with a "youth" model, just because of her age. Some youngsters do just fine with a full size model and then they have a rifle that they can grow with and that will last them for life. Also, from experience, if you can give her a variety of different 22s to try, she'll pick the one she likes pretty quick.

I'm a little over 6 ft tall and I own a Henry H001y. It works just fine for me, and I find the small size to be really handy at times. She'll love it, and that's a promise.

What I absolutely don't recommend is a semiautomatic. I have nothing against them as I own plenty of them for non sporting purposes. However for a new shooter I would recommend either a bolt action, pump, or a lever. The Henry MiniBolt would be perfect for your granddaughter. I'm not recommending this model because this is a pro HRA forum. It really is the ideal youth starter rifle. Stainless and synthetic means that it is less likely to be effected by and show the inevitable scratches, bumps and bruises a young a shooter will inflict apon it. It is a single shot. It is safer. Forces the shooter to slow down as well. If the stock is too small for her then a Ruger American Compact would be the next logical choice. All this said, the Henry youth model lever action would be a fine choice if that is the direction you wish to take.

As soon as weather permits, I am going to take her to a friend's range. I have a Henry 22 octagon barrel rifle that I can see if the lever action will be a problem. I definitely agree on the semiautomatic . Her attention span is very short. I also saw the single shot Henry, looks good. I appreciate every ones comments . A pretty day and a few hours of fellowship, will probably answer a lot of questions. Thanks again.

I think the H001 is a perfect starter rifle for a child. It is small enough to be a good fit for a lot of children, but big enough for them to grow into and use into adulthood. As a plus, it is fairly easy on the wallet.

My son started with a Cricket. Terrible accuracy but a good safe starter gun. Only one shot at a time. Good for teaching basics.
Then I got him a CZ455 Scout. Awesomely accurate sweet little bolt action. Its a keeper. May be his son's first gun someday.
Now that he is 14 and big enough its a Henry H001 all the way. We have two of them and have shooting competitions. (I get the scoped one)
