45-70 range report

after mounting a 3 - 9 Nikon on our Henry H010CC 45-70 we took her to the range this morning .... started out sighting in the scope at 7 yards n moved back in stages out to 75 yards .... fired a total of 49 rounds in the process .... the target used for the last 5 rounds is shown below ....

At 7 yards with the 45-70 I am surprised that the concussion didn't blast the target out to75 yards for you.
Looks like you got her dialed in down right nicely.

they have fixed ranges with the shortest being 7 yards .... from there 15, 25, 50, 75, & 100 yards .... all rounds were fired from a bench rest .... that's the most rounds I've fired at at single setting .... hope to get back out there in the next few days and see how she does at 100 yards

factory Cowboy Action Loads purchased at Cabela's .... can't remember the brand, its not shown on their website .... our son has sold his place in St Louis and will be moving back home in late June .... all of our reloading equipment/supplies are boxed up for the move .... don't anticipate getting it back in operation until the fall .... for the most part the we have plenty to tie us over but the 75-70 is a new caliber for us

However, mine don't quite have the sharp & accurate "bullet hole designs" your target does!!

What kind of scope do you have jebar Nikon pro staff buck masters...? I am considering a Nikon my self and I have and older pro staff but thinking of going with one with a bdc. Reticle

Missouri's park system is far superior to NC's where no park like Jay Henges exist .... we are talking about going back over tomorrow and getting together with some acquaintances at the trap range on Saturday

my wife and I returned to the range again today .... she has a new J-frame Smith and is scheduled to take the concealed carry class in May .... most of the time was spent with her firing but I did manage to get a few rounds down range .... nothing really new to report, today's targets looked much like yesterday's .... will be back over there in the morning for some trap shooting

in thinking about our time spent at the range over the last two days, its clear that we are in a minority .... 20 firing stations, most with two shooters .... wheel guns like my wife's Smith J-Fram and my Ruger Redhawk were few and far between .... no way I was able to make an absolute count but I'm certain that counting our 2 there were no more than 5 .... semi auto pistols of various sizes were clearly the order of the day .... AR type rifles were by far the most common long guns .... there were a few bolt action rifles .... there was one and only one lever action, our Henry 45-70 .... there were 4 men working the range and at one time or another all of them came by to look at it .... I'm told that during the weeks prior to hunting season, the numbers of bolt actions goes way up .... to me that stands to reason

Same experience for me at the 25 yard indoor range I use. A few wheel gun shooters, mostly bottom feeders and AR type rifles. Most folks seem to be in a hurry to use up as much ammo as possible. It gets pretty loud so double up on ear protection helps. I haven't seen anyone else with a lever gun yet. I carry my mare's leg in a short tactical shotgun case. I frequently get asked if it is a SBR. I tell them nope it's a pistol. Then open it up and surprise them with my little Henry.

Your description at Henges sounds exactly like you've been walking alongside the shooting stations here at my MDC Parma Woods range.

My Ruger SP101 at times will have a "wheelie" brother around, but rarely will there be another lever-action rifle. When someone's eye catches sight of my bronze Henry Big Boy, it kind of starts a "viewing line" along with short but complimentary chats. Yes, and the ROs at Parma Woods often stand & look a little longer at the BBB when they check for secure firearms during the ceasefires.

These are the times that being in the "minority" is fun.

At the 25 yard indoor range where I shoot, only pistol caliber rifles are allowed, and I've only seen one other person with a rifle, a 10/22. I've also never seen anyone else shooting a revolver, though I'm sure there must be others that I haven't noticed. Most everyone shoots semi-automatic handguns.

I think you are right the bolts far outnumber the levers.
We still enjoy ours though.

thank you, kind words appreciated .... I don't see the numbers changing much in the near future but with Henry introducing new long range calibers, I do believe it won't be too long before we see them out on the range

Looks like yours is shooting pretty well. I need to get the Skinner sight mounted on mine. That recoil pad makes those long range days more pleasant. The brass ones don't have that.

I've shot the HSM's. Not bad shooting at all. Buffalo bore is a whole 'nother story. Their specialty is HOT HEAVY rounds. +P+ in every caliber. A lot of their loads are Ruger only.
