1964 CJ6 4BT

Been working on this for a while. Finally fitting the CJ6 body onto the after market CJ8 frame. Final plans is for a 4bt Cummins under the hood backed up with a NV4500 and a twin stick NP205.

Planning on it being a fair weather daily driver. Hope to get it out west to run some fire roads, and mild trails. Not building it with heavy enough axles for extreme trails, Dana 44 front and 9" Ford rear axle with 33/10.50-15 tires. Have too much time into body work and getting too old to get real stupid!

I had a '53 CJ3B back in the '70s/early '80s, wish I still had it. It was completely stock with a rebuilt engine and the transmission that always wanted to pop out of 2nd gear but it still managed to take us to (and get us back from) some crazy and dangerous places.

If I had lots of money I'd like to set one up as a rock crawler, that looks like it would be a lot of fun.

Figure I'll be around a third of the cost of a new Rubicon and hopefully even get better fuel mileage.. It will have defrosters, if nothing more than for show. Since I'm not sure with all the work I've done to the body if a hard top will fit right, and the only soft top available for a CJ6 isn't the greatest. So it will be topless, not winter friendly.

It's quite the combination of parts with a grill off a CJ5, the body from a CJ6, the hood and roll bar off a CJ7, the frame is for a CJ8, the front fenders are from an unknown CJ model, and front axle is from under a Wagoneer!

Was kidding about the defrosters although they were non-existent on my '53. It did have a heater that did semi-OK with the half cab top it had on it. My defroster was a towel and a ice scraper. I did replace the driver's side wiper with an electric unit, even a brand new vacuum wiper was pretty worthless when you were going uphill.

I just wish that in all those years of driving my green jeep, i had folded the windshield down and taken the doors off at least once.

My wife has a 2016 Wrangler. She loves it and it is fun to drive. It runs good to with that V-6 in it and its not to bad on gas. But I still prefer a little more room. It would be tight in there hauling some of the stuff to the range that I take now and then along with the Henrys.

That's the nice thing about a CJ6, they actually cut a CJ5 in half behind the door opening and stretched the body and frame 20". At 6'7" there is no way I'd fit comfortably in the driver's seat! But, with the extra room in the CJ6 I can move the front seat and back seat back 6" giving me room and still having room for rear seat passenger.

Most people have never even seen a CJ6, they were only produced for 20 years at an average of 2,500 units per year and most went over seas!

Not sure what you want to know about the 4bt. But, it is referred to as the "little Paint Shaker". It is basically a 4cylinder version of the 6bt that Dodge started running in 1989. In fact it it uses a lot of the same parts, everything but parts such as the crankshaft, and cam. The injector pumps are also similar just made for a 4 cylinder instead of a 6 cylinder,

The advantage of the 4bt for a build like this is the shorter length due to the missing 2 cylinders. And, they only weigh ~780 lbs compared to the ~1100 lbs for a 6bt. The biggest downside is the vibration. Stock they are anywhere from 90 hp to 130 hp making around 300 ft/lb of torque. Easily bumped to over 200 hp with a change of the turbo and injection pump modifications. Most 4wd swaps will average between 20-30 mpg for fuel consumption depending on the tune and final drive ratio.

interesting ... just curious, why go with a diesel ?

I've built other vehicles over the year with gas motors, have never done a build with a diesel. That and I'm getting old enough that I don't need to go flying through areas at full throttle to keep the motor in it's power band, and the diesel makes enough power low in the rpm range that you can wander through the woods just off idle and enjoy the view.

Besides 20-30 mph sounds a lot better than 5-15 mpg on the street with the current cost of fuel!
