I was about to holler that I would take it, but Bill, being the obsessive haggler that he is, stopped me. I rolled my eyes when he offered $350, instead. To our surprise, though, after a phone call to the owner, we walked out of the store with this Marlin 39A for $350, me in a state of shock. (The red dot I added, later.)
Since we were on the way to the range, anyway, we just shot it with the factory open sights.
Yesterday, I added a Bushnell TRS 25 red dot, since we already have a 39A with a scope and one with a peep.
Even with just a red dot, the Marlin shot like it was scoped. Great example of the 39A legacy for accuracy. Like all our 39s, this one has a great trigger, crisp and about 3 pounds in pull. Really helps with accuracy.
At one point, Bill went John Wayne on me and started just pouring shots into the bull as quick as he could get the red dot on target, all the while with a big smile on his face. Great lever guns do that to you. They have a magic that no other type of rifle has, at least for us.
Just a coincidence, but both this 39A and our scoped 39A that we found last spring, were both made in 1981. Makes for a nice pair.
