Anyone shooting Sharps Rifles

Are any Sharps shooters out there reloading black powder cartridges for their Sharps? This is a 1874 Hartford Sharps made by C. Sharps Arms in Big Timber, Montana. 34-inch heavy barrel, Deluxe Long Ranger Tang Sight, Globe with Post & Ball Front Sight, Buckhorn Sight, Patch Box and Extra Fancy American Walnut in 45-70 Caliber.

I made 16 Sharps Cartridge boxes for less than $12.00

D**n tats pretty!!!!......But not me yet, I do shoot a 1885 Hi Wall in 45-70 I have loaded some black powder rounds just to see what happind...Smoke same recoil velocity with a 405 gr bullet, 1300 fps same grin.....

I've been looking real close at a Cimarron Sharps "Quigley" model. Awful tempting in 45-70...

Once you start shooting black powder cartridge, it's hard to go back to smokeless. I load smokeless in my 44-40's for my Henry. I've been seriously considering trying black powder.

What a gorgeous rifle! Not sure I could even lift it to shoot, though. Maybe a sporter version, though? We do have some Low Wall rimfires and love them.

It's a shooting sticks kinda gun that's for sure!

I have read that almost all the buff hunters and a lot of "frontiersmen'' tried to keep and use shooting sticks or as I heard they were called "Moses sticks"

I use to shoot them all the time but I just dont have the time anymore to stay with it as its something you need to do alot of to stay sharp enough to go to the matches. Also having the distance around to shoot those isnt easy either. There is an RCBS mould for the 44-40 that Mike Venturino talks about in Shooting Lever guns of the old west. I bought the mould when I had a 44-40 and gave it a try. The load and bullet was the most accurate load I ever shot in the 44-40. I always used the swiss black and still do. I dont shoot much cartridge but I do shoot alot of muzzleloaders. Both kinds flint and percussion. They are alot of fun. Al

Thanks, BigAl for the information on the 44-40 loads. I'm going to look the article up tonight and check out the RCBS mould info. I use Swiss in my 45-70 cartridges.

Here's quite a selection of Sharps rifles made by Pedersoli available from this Canadian importer. I don't know how the quality compares with the Shiloh rifles, some reviews say they are very close. Better be, considering the prices...

Shiloh Sharps can take something like 2 years to actually get after you order it. Fine rifles.

But so are Pedersoli's. It's my understanding that Pedersoli uses a progressive twist rate in their barrels that makes them very accurate. They win a lot of matches. Personally a Pedersoli Sharps 1877 is on my short list of guns to own.
