AR-15 At The Range, 7/1/2017

No pics of guns or targets, just a report. Today my one and only AR-15 got to see some daylight for the first time in too long. It only took a few moments, and a couple of shots to remind me of just how enjoyable AR's are to shoot.

My rifle is a bone stock Ruger AR-556 that I bought two years ago for a couple of reasons. One reason was uncertainty- it was very unclear back in 2015 just how things were going to go politically, and I wanted to make sure I had one in case they got hard to get in the future.

The second, and probably main reason for getting it was that I wanted a rifle that is easy to shoot. For several reasons, AR-15's may be the easiest centerfire rifles to learn to shoot well. They have excellent ergonomics, are small and handy, and the .223/5.56 round creates very little recoil.

I took a few shots today at paper at 50 yards, and fine tuned my sights a tad, and then put the rest of two boxes of ammo down range at steel swingers at 100 yards. Even with the stock iron sights, hitting a hockey puck sized steel swinger is relatively easy. What a joy that little rifle is to shoot.

The only downside? Back home, it's time to clean it. AR-15's are "direct impingement" guns, which means they "throw up" on themselves every time you squeeze the trigger. Every trip to the range means about 45 minutes of cleaning time afterwards. But hey- it's well worth it.

They may get dirty fast but they are very easy to disassemble and reassemble. Hitting a puck at 50 yards with stock sights is fantastic.

I actually enjoy cleaning guns. And the AR breaks down so easily that I never minded cleaning the m16. And our armorers were very picky on inspection. We had to clean them after every range trip. And they had to pass inspection before we could turn them back in to the armory.

You DO need one. And, they're dirt cheap right now. So is the ammo.

I have 3 and there all different calibers. But like you said ditto they are a hoot to shoot. I have a bowling pin swinging target that I like to set up and shoot. There bigger than your hockey puck size steel but hitting them while there swinging is good fun. Al

I haven't shot mine in a while. It is a blast, even miss T likes to shoot it.
