Range Report: two cups of coffee

Evelyn and I went to the range today as planned. She shot the 452 CZ Scout but as many of you know I've had accuracy problems with it so we quickly put it away. Next up was the 452-2E American wearing a Nikon P-22 scope. The targets were NRA OFFICIAL 50-YARD SMALL BORE RIFLE TARGET TQ-3/2(P). The ammo was Norma Match-22.

This was her best five-round group.

I think she did remarkable! Not only was she accurate but she also handled the firearms safely. I did have to remind her about indexing a few times but that was all.

She also shot a vintage 10/22, a Henry pump and a Mare's Leg. I wanted to give her experience shooting different actions. She only shot the CZ at paper and the rest just plinked at debris laying on the berm. It's a bummer the Scout didn't shoot better because it was a natural fit for her petite frame.

22s are a good choice for beginners. I hate to see new shooters pushed to shoot heavier recoiling guns because their sponsors are sure they will just love it, since they are veteran shooters and it doesn't bother them. Good way to lose a new shooter before they get started...

That is a great group. Good for her. We gals can shoot.

The last time Evelyn shot was with her father when she was a teenager. I think the reason she shot so good was she didn't have any BAD habits. And she wasn't afraid to shoot my .22's. At first when I was talking to her she was not very keen on shooting thinking she was going to be shooting an 03 or an M1. Her father was a drill instructor and he was that way with all eight kids.

If you noticed I said she shot at 50-yard targets but didn't say the distance. I had no idea of how she would shoot and wanted it to be fun for her so the targets were set somewhere between 35 to 40 yards. It would give the allusion of her shooting better. But really I didn't need to do that. A 0.695" group at 35 yards is still fantastic.

We really had fun and I'm sure she will want to go again. When we were at the range it was all about her. I was attentive and I kept her busy but not overwhelmed. But I didn't do everything, she had to load her own magazines the first few times so she understood how too. After that I just kept her magazines full.

She was really impressed with range safety. There was only three couples and everyone cooperated with each other for cease-fires. No one did anything stupid like what occasionally happens.

I shot the pump for the first time and loved it. I've cycled it maybe a thousand times just sitting around the house watching the Mariners. I was a bit disappointed it will not slam-fire. I filled it full of shorts and it took twenty. I was plinking with it when Evelyn was shooting.

This is the same rifle I shot at 100 yards last time out. So the rifle and ammo she was shooting was up for the challenge. I didn't choose a Henry because, well lets face it, a Henry isn't a CZ.

That flyer was because the guy next to me shot a centerfire a split second before I shot.

This is one Henry I'm going to leave alone. The sights are very quick to pick up a target even though they might not be the most accurate.

Was at the range a few weeks ago and a father was there with his daughter. He was forcing her to shoot a .40 that she really didn't want to shoot. I wanted to go over and slap him. The best I could do was go offer a .22 pistol to shoot instead. Fortunately, she didn't seem overly traumatized by it.

Looks like a really nice day at the range. A lot of women are surprised by how much fun shooting can be. Like you say, most don't have a lot of bad habits to unlearn and frequently do quite well early on.

Start small, ie .22. Start close. Once they get comfortable you can move up in caliber, and out on distance.

Hope this becomes a regular outing for the two of you.

I did say you CAN move up in caliber, not that you have to.

Clovispup and I both love .22s. I will say though, that if I lost all my guns in a tragic boating accident, the first one I would replace would be the Henry BBS in .357. It is so much fun to shoot. The 1911 in .45 ACP is quickly becoming a favorite as well.

Still, we each have our own likes and dislikes. Makes for a more interesting world.
