Henry Big Bioy .357 performance and range report.

I finally took my new Henry .357 Big Boy to the indoor range for it's first firing. I haven't shot a rifle in over 40 years, so today was pretty exciting for me. It was an indoor range that maxed out at 25 yards. For my old eyes, I did change out the factory buckhorn rear sight to a barrel mounted Skinner peep sight before shooting it for this first time. So far, I'm pretty happy with the Skinner barrel mounted peep sight and factory front bead. The Henry ran great using Geco .357 mag ammo. This Henry is a hoot to shoot! Anyway, here's the target set at 25yds from a standing position:

one heck of a target for someone who hasn't fired a rifle in 40 years .. .. thanks for the range report .... its good to hear you are pleased with 357, my bet is your groups will get even smaller as you are able to spend more time sending rounds down range

Thank you! I need some opinions on sight adjustment. I did adjust the Skinner sight elevation after the first 30 rounds. I did one full rotation in elevation, and that put me on a pretty good vertical plane. Now I'm wondering if I need to drift the Skinner sight to the left because I'm shooting a bit right. What do you think? Should I try to bump it just a hair or leave it alone?

I've got that same rifle with a receiver mounted Skinner peep. I was also shooting a bit to the right, so I drifted the front sight to the right to correct it.

After looking over some other targets from that day, I raised the Skinner peep 1/2 turn and drifted it a hair to the left.

Second time out with the Henry .357 with the Skinner barrel mounted peep sight. This was outdoors from 33 yards with a standing two hand hold. With my old eyes, I'm very pleased with the peep sight so far.

Like you, my elder eyes and the buckhorn did not quite get along. So I drifted out the buckhorn and have Skinner sending me a barrel-mounted peep sight. I have that same sight on my Henry SGC (it came stock on that rifle), and it works great.

Congrats on your new Henry. The .357 Big Boys are indeed a great rifle to shoot! Enjoy-enjoy.

Not trying to hijack this thread, but PT7 I have a question for you. Why did you decided on a barrel-mounted Skinner for your H012MR over a receiver mounted one? Our SGC's are receiver mounted. I'm planning on getting a H012MR in the future and may go with a Skinner as well.

I had the barrel-mounted peep on two other Henrys -- an H006M .357 BBB, and an H001M .22 Magnum. The barrel-mounted peeps were darn good to use, and about the least expensive Skinner peep sights, too. So since $$$ is often a factor, that is partly why I went this route for my H012MR.

Also I've known some folk who had to change out the front sight after mounting a receiver-mounted peep. I wanted to avoid that possibility, as well. If I find I've grown too accustomed to a peep as is mounted on the SGC, I can still go for that style on my .357 down-the-road. I'll for sure "see" if that happens.

There is one thing I'm pretty certain about, however. I'll definitely stick with the Skinner peep sights no matter where mounted on my Henrys. I like iron sights, and I think the Skinner products are the best-made ones out there. That's my story of choices.
