Loving the 1911

Clovispup and I made our "Tuesday Afternoon" trip to the range. I should start playing the Moody Blues on the way there.

Anyway, CP did great with her new SP101. She had a slightly disappointing start, but she is on target now, and shooting great groups.

In other news, and referencing the title, I'm coming to the realization how much I really like the 1911 platform. I'm shooting nice groups MOST of the time. Probably not much more accurate than with the model 10, but those big bullets make nice 5 shot one ragged holes. Or nearly one ragged hole. Despite only having this firearm for a couple months, and I've run a minority of the probably 1500+ rounds through it, I'm starting to get that extension of my hand feeling with it. I really like that.

CP has taken to shooting it one handed for several groups each range trip. She has very respectable groups one handed. That's my girl.

I would love to use the Range Officer as my carry weapon, but a full sized 1911 is just a little too big for comfortable carry. Yes, I've tried it. Yes, I can do it. No, I don't like carrying a large brick on my belt. OWB open carry in the woods during hunting season should be fine. That's the plan, anyway. Nice OWB holster came with the gun, as did a two mag carrier.

First, let me say that you two make a lovely couple. I can feel the love in that pic. Brings a big smile to this girl's face.

I've tried twice to purge the collection of 1911s and semi-autos in general, doing my best to stay with single shots and a revolver or two, but each time I tried, just couldn't bring myself to part with my old reliable SA Mil-spec. That 1911 has kept me in the 1911 game. Finally threw in the towel and admitted that I'll never be able to give up on 1911s, so the collection has grown back into a few more 1911s. Besides, my husband, Bill, also refused to sell his Range Officer in 9mm.

Just so you know, CP is my daughter. We have been shooting together for a couple of years now. I just wish she had gotten the bug earlier. It's really great to have a common interest with, and great time spent together as father/daughter. I look forward to our time together all week. I'm always bragging on her ability at work and at the range. They are probably tired of hearing it. I don't care.

With several of our weapons, she shoots them better than I do. The Henry Big Boy Steel in .357 is one of those. She gives me a run for my money with the 1911. The Mark I target is her territory. I'm better with my 9mm compact, the Smith model 10 and, at least for now, her SP101 in .357.

I'm not sure if her success is due to good genetics, or good teaching.

Rented one before purchasing the RO. They didn't have the full sized RO available for rental. We both liked it well enough, but wanted a full sized. We got this as a range weapon. I, and now she, have the carry weapon that suits us. The only upside to the compact is smaller size and weight. Both of those are negatives at the range. Besides after we had pretty much decided on the full sized RO, our local store put it on sale for $650. On top of that we got 4 extra mags, a mag holder, and OWB holster from SA. As soon as I saw the flyer on the wall for that price, I sent Clovispup on into the range and went and started filling out the paperwork.

Congrats, I taught all four kids to shoot. The three girls were really good. The oldest, the son, could shoot, but just wasn't all that in to it. The youngest daughter eventually became evil with a handgun. The middle of the three girls is best with long guns. The oldest daughter just likes to shoot. It was something we could do together. Now, spread out across the country, with lives and families of their own, they all own their own guns and shoot with their husbands.

I love to see other dads shoot with their family.
