Yesterday at the range, a buddy had his Glock 27 on the bench. He invited me to shoot it, and I can't say why I said no, but apparently something told me to nicely take a rain check on the offer. So, he picks it up, and starts shooting at Steel at 25 yards.

Strangely, his Glock stopped a couple of times, and it wasn't shooting very accurately. We were like, "Eugene, what's up with your Glock? Glocks don't jam. "

A quick look at the brass on the ground around his bench presented us with the answer: he'd loaded a Glock 26 magazine filled with 9mm ammo and was firing it out of his .40 cal. gun. Geez.*

On the bright side? 1. No one was hurt. 2. No damage was done to the gun. 3. Surprisingly, the gun still sorta worked, and didn't really shoot all that bad, even with completely wrong ammo.

*Apparently, he has an aftermarket 9mm barrel for the gun, which allows him to shoot cheap 9mm ammo with it. Might be a good idea in the future, though, to clearly mark the 9mm mags.

It can get confusing at times. I've picked up the wrong magazine before but have never fired the wrong caliber. I painted a small red dot on my CZ .22WMR magazines to tell them from the .17HMR.

The biggest danger of shooting a smaller case round in a larger chamber is case rupture. This is will be potentially the most dangerous in a revolver, less so in a closed breech gun. A bullet too small for the bore will exit it, safely, but give lousy accuracy, of course.

Yeah, it can be an issue for folks like us that take a wide variety of guns and cartridges on each range trip. I've managed to shoot a 357 out of one of my 44 mag Contender barrels. Bill has managed to shoot a 17 HMR out of a 22 mag CZ. We didn't blow ourselves up, but it was definitely a wakeup call to pay more attention. I now do the duty of handing out ammo with guns and restricting access to ammo of other cartridges when we shoot. I strictly enforce the rule of only one type of cartridge at the bench at one time.

The most dangerous situation is taking ammo in one cartridge loaded to various levels and shooting them in the wrong gun. This can definitely get you a blown up gun. A good example is taking 45 Colt +P, aka Ruger/Contender only loads, with you to the range and shooting them in a 45 Colt revolver other than a Ruger. I make it a point never to take these hot 45 Colt loads with me to the range when I'm shooting my USFA in 45 Colt. To be honest, I no longer shoot these super hot loads that are safe to use only in specific guns. When I need more oomph than a standard cartridge can supply, I just move up to another cartridge. Don't see much sense in trying to turn a 45 colt into a 454. If I really need a 454, I'll buy one.

I am surprised that the extractor held the 9mm rounds in place and not have lite primer strikes! I just tried my Glock 20 with 9mm dummy rounds. Won't even eject the dummy rounds when you cycle them by hand. I guess the slide velocity was enough to get the empty cases to bounce around and fall out.

I remember reading at least one account of this on the interwebs in the past. I never thought I'd witness it first hand, though.

What happened the other day at our range is consistent with other accounts of people doing the same thing. A .40 cal. Glock will fire 9mm, but it will be prone to stoppages, and it will not be very accurate.
