Hot day at Parma Woods Range

I did get out today to our state-run shooting range, Parma Woods, with my Ruger LCRX. Even though it was 92* when I arrived, there was a nice, brisk breeze, and of course it helps to shoot in the shade of the shooting booth. So I was ready and energized to keep on mastering this .38 Special + P snubby revolver.

Here is my one and only target showing my first 10-round group. (More coming on why the only target). I shot off hand at 7 yards using Winchester (White Box) 130gr FMJ ammo. The target is 3", and after my first 10-round group, I was a happy camper. I placed 7/10 POIs in target. The three in white cardboard were my first three shots. I felt I was having a really, really good start!

But then everyone got stopped. I did have other .38 Special reloads, and also .38 Special + P reloads, but never got to use any. Here is the unusual happening. An MDC range hour is broken up into 4 commence fire/cease fire segments. That allows everyone to head down range to change targets or yardage distance. At the very start of the second commence fire, I heard the Range Master call another immediate cease fire. Everyone was wondering what was up for the immediate cease fire? A couple of minutes later, one of the assistant Range Masters came over to the booths and told us that just behind the berm at end of the range (100 yards out), they spotted people walking in the land fill area. Good that the Range Masters are such sharp lookouts! Hard to imagine walking there with all that loud gunfire going on!!

Well, it took most of the range hour to get the situation squared away. I didn't get to stay. I had to pack up and get home as I'm covered for my caregiving responsibilities for a limited number of away hours on Tuesdays. Not knowing there would be this delay, I didn't have enough time to finish my range hour. So I got to shoot one solid 10-round group today. C'est la vie. I wonder if I could have kept on going with such good POIs like I had on target one? I'd be willing to say "yes!"

A good way to end. When I turned in my range card, they gave me a pass to shoot my next hour free whenever I go there again! Good CS even though the time-delay and incident wasn't the range's fault.

Short and sweet Range Report. Still a good day, and I am glad to say, it was fun to play.

I am...thanks. But I'd really like to get those first 3 errant shots in the target, too. The first shot is always the most important one. Simply means I'll be on the range again for more practice!

That's great shooting for a gun designed for close-up work. Those light little snubbies aren't easy to shoot. They take regular practice to shoot with that kind of accuracy. Glad you got out, short, though the session was.

Good shooting on a hot day. Shooting on any day is good. Thanks for the reminder that I need to go sweat way too much at my local indoor range.

Okay, Ditto. I've noticed there are always comedians around!

And just like what was said at the range that day when the immediate cease fire was called and we learned there were hikers down range. One fellow said, "Looks good. We now have moving targets!" Yup, the laughter quickly followed.

Appreciate your comment on my "short" shooting, NCG. I really came well out of the gate on Tuesday; wish I could have gone further around the track....

I'm not exactly sure why, but this Ruger LCRX seems to me rather easy to shoot. I shot very well the first time out with it, and that really surprised me. As I think back over some of the handguns I've had/have, this is just about the easiest to handle. I did have one semi-auto that was really cool to shoot ---- a Springfield Armory XD 4" Service Model in 9MM. The sight system it had was a dovetail front and rear (steel) 3 - dot --- easy, easy sight acquisition and a very accurate pistol. That was a fun gun as is the LCRX.

Trust me. I'll not just sit around looking at this target, although it's a keeper. Like I said, there are three errant POIs quite visible. Really need to get those splashed with the other seven! This revolver and the ranges will get together often.

Good for you, PT. I've always believed that if you are going to carry a gun for self-defense, you need to make a committment to practice with it on a regular basis. This goes double for small guns because they are harder to shoot with accuracy. It's the price you pay for that smaller, easier to carry size. I constantly nag a couple of friends (to no avail) who carry these small guns because they only get out once or twice a year and actually shoot their guns. Just my opinion, though. They obviously don't share it.
