What length cleaning rod do you use to clean your big boy rifle? Going to buy a pro shot brand rod which comes in either 26 or 36 inch length. Not sure which length would be best for my 357mag henry rifle.

I use an Outers Universal Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun Brass Cleaning Rod that I bought at Amazon. It breaks down into three pieces and I use it with both of my Henrys and handguns.

The total length of the rod is 29 and 1/8 inches. With the handle, it's 31 and 1/4 inches.

I wanted a brass rod, thinking it might be less likely to do damage if I ever got careless.

shortly after purchasing our Henry 44 mag I purchased an Otis Elite Cleaning System with Optics Cleaning Gear === https://www.amazon.com/Otis-Elite-Clean ... aning+kits === as a matter of personal preference, I don't like cleaning a barrel in a manner that the crud can fall back down into the innards .... consequently, I prefer cleaning my lever actions and other firearms that I must clean going from the muzzle down into the receiver with cables .... have been following this principal for a long time and it works for me

If you are going to clean it only from the muzzle, go with the 26" rod. If you are going to clean it from the breech (after taking off the lever and bolt), then you will need the 36". I've got a 36" Pro-shot - it's nice - strong and super smooth.

Just yesterday I bought an Outers 28" rifle cleaning rod. Haven't used it yet. I have a 3-piece rod, but have found the "connections" tend to catch on the muzzle crown. This Outers is a single rod, so hope this will work better. Some folk at the LGS have told me that Tiptons makes a quality 1-piece rod. Might look for one unless this Outers "comes through" okay. :*)

for those concerned about cleaning rods damaging a rifle's muzzle, a good brass muzzle guard === http://www.brownells.com/gun-cleaning-c ... d5650.aspx === can take care of the issue .... I've used one since the '70's with my Hawkin black powder rifle
