Lewis Lead Remover
based on the recommendation of a friend, who is a member of this forum, I just ordered Lewis Lead Remover kits from Brownells for 44/45 caliber and 38 caliber rifles/pistols .... I'd never heard of this system before but he has been using it for many years and says it is the best he has seen .... in this link ===> http://www.brownells.com/gun-cleaning-c ... 20823.aspx can be found a video shows demonstrating how it works .... we didn't need to order the more expensive kit that comes with a Handle .... due to the amount of force needed to pull the lead remover through a barrel, an aluminum rod will not work .... the brass patches are said to last a very long time .... with most of the bullets we will be firing through our Henry 44 and 45-70 being lead, it makes sense to have such a cleaning system on hand
Re: Lewis Lead Remover
Been using Lewis Lead Remover for over 15 years. Works great clearing lead from forcing cones.

Re: Lewis Lead Remover
it appears that Brownells has bought Lewis .... no longer available on Amazon
Re: Lewis Lead Remover
The Lewis Lead Remover has been around for a long time. Maybe it came from the Lewis and Clark expedition although I know they had a powerful air rifle. LOL Seriously it's a good product that has withstood the test of time.

Re: Lewis Lead Remover
its only been the last few months that we have started reloading low power, lead bullets .... having always used jacketed bullets, we have only recently begun dealing with lead deposits in a barrel .... hence Lewis Lead Remover being new to us .... as best I can tell the barrels on our 44 and 45-70 are clean/lead free .... it will be interesting to use the Lewis system on them and see if that is correct

Going to have to get that. Leading is a new deal to me. Not much fun scrubbing with a bronze brush.
Re: Lewis Lead Remover
Wish I had known about this product/kit when I had my shotgun. It was a bear to get the wad fouling out of that 12-gauge barrel! I did about everything I could think of other than crawling inside with a blowtorch!!JEBar wrote:based on the recommendation of a friend, who is a member of this forum, I just ordered Lewis Lead Remover kits from Brownells for 44/45 caliber and 38 caliber rifles/pistols .... I've had a Lewis Lead Remover for over 40 years and never need it in my bores . I use it to clean my forcing cone on my revolvers . If your gun is leading up you are doing something wrong . When I shot combat type matches or Cowboy action shooting I shot over 1000 cast bullets a month and never leaded up a gun . . Below is a pic of my Lone Wolf barrel I got for my Glock to shoot cast bullets .. I shot 400 rds in it and I remover it from my gun and took this pic . NO LEADING

Re: Lewis Lead Remover
I have heard only good things about the Lewis Lead Remover. It is a little costly, especially if you shoot several calibers.
This is what I currently use. I saw it somewhere or read it somewhere but do not remember where I saw it.
I take some strands from a Chore Boy copper scouring pad and wrap it around a wore out bore brush. My leading issues are minor and this works for me.

Re: Lewis Lead Remover
I shots these gun in SASS/CAS matches for 16 yrs and have had any leading at 750 fps and Only the forcing cone need attention and after cut the forcing cone to 11 Degrees made a big improvement . I shoot plain base bullets to 1000 fps and over 900 fps I shoot gas check bullet . The next thing is I NEVER shoot jacket bullet in my cast bullet shooters . The lead sticks to copper fouling and it is almost impossible to remover copper from a barrel . The gun below has never had a jacket bullet fired in then in 16 yrs I owned them . My bottom feeders have 2 barrels one for lead and one for jackets . I hate cleaning lead out of a barrel and I can shoot 400 rds cast bullet in my Glock and clean my barrels with 1 wet patch and 2 dry ones and I'm done .

Re: Lewis Lead Remover
There is 100 things that makes a gun lead . There is No one thing will stop a gun from leading . Bullet fit , the alloy of bullet , the powder you choose , the amount of powder , Stainless barrel lead faster then blue one , shooting jacket bullets and lead bullets in same barrel , The forcing cone in revolvers , The chamber size and throat . This book is the best I have ever owned or read on cast bullet and will answer all question . It has been of of print for 40 yrs , but you can still find it around on the internet and worth every penny they ask for it . I've still read it today if I have a cast bullet problem .............Squatch wrote:It's the handloading learning curve that causes leading for me!

Thanks, I'll look for one. I have the new Lyman cast bullet handbook. It is also a wealth of info.
Handloading is about learning as much as you can and then trying it. Their will be experiments. So their will be leading! Every test batch I makes is much cleaner then the last batch.

I have the Lyman in mainly loading manual and a great book for find Unique for rifles and pistols , it is OK to go to book for some answers . The other book is the best . If you can't find one let me know . I think I know someone who got out of the casting business .

Re: Lewis Lead Remover
as noted in another thread, in the last 2 days I've fired 198 rounds of HSM Cowboy Action 405 Grain RNFP lead bullets .... when I cleaned the barrel I was pleseantly surprised to find very little lead .... a brass brush and a couple of cloth patches took care of it .... somehow I expected to find moretx gunrunner wrote:I've had a Lewis Lead Remover for over 40 years and never need it in my bores . Shooting heavy 40 lb rams at 150 meters we got lots of lead but we pushed the limits because making a ringing sound was a miss, it had to fall. That's when I found Lewis lead out, a long time ago.

Re: Lewis Lead Remover
over the last month we have literally fired hundreds of lead bullets through our Henry 44 and 45-70 .... all rounds were low speed target loads so minimal barrel leading was anticipated .... happily we found no lead buildup in either rifle .... the pictures below show the Lewis fitting after it was pulled 4 times through each barrel .... the major surprise was while the same fitting fits 44 & 45, the adjustment of the fitting is much different .... unless we get into using heavy, hot loaded, lead bullets for hunting, I do not anticipate lead buildup being an issue .... I'm glad we purchased the Lewis Lead Remover, its a most handy tool to have in the cleaning kit

I've never had problems with lead. I must be shooting the right ammo.

Re: Lewis Lead Remover
I've been a serous lead only shoot for over 40 yrs . I have won tons of matches with lead bullet against jacket bullet shooter . I keep all my cast bullets below 1400 fps . I never have any leading problems in any of my gun . If you are leading up a bore and need a brush or Lewis lead remove in a bore you are doing something wrong . You need to do more reading on why a guns leads . You will never learn it on a Forum . I build all my match gun and won tons of 1st place and I have the trophy to prove it for the non-believers . I hate people thinking you must put up with leading if you shoot cast bullet .eldermike wrote:Shooting heavy 40 lb rams at 150 meters we got lots of lead but we pushed the limits because making a ringing sound was a miss, it had to fall. Very interesting to read; I just bought some JSP to shoot but perhaps should not use them again (shot 20 rounds so far).tx gunrunner wrote:I shots these gun in SASS/CAS matches for 16 yrs and have had any leading at 750 fps and Only the forcing cone need attention and after cut the forcing cone to 11 Degrees made a big improvement .
