April 2/17 Cimarron 1860 Henry & 1860 Colt Richards

Back to the range this morning. 1860 Henry Rifle, and 1860 Colt Richards Cartridge Conversion.

Shot the revolver at 15 yds, standing, 1 hand.
Shot the rifle at 25 yds off hand standing, and 100 yds on one knee so I can rest my elbow. Custer's last stand style.

The revolver was all over the place as a result of my 3 month winter hiatus from shooting. But at least I was on the paper, and not in the next county. The 100 yard board with the Henry was a challenge for sure. Just seeing the 8" circle clearly is part of it. 10 rounds at 100 yds, with 7 on paper, 1 clipped the bottom and 2 went over the top. The 2 over the top were me trying out the ladder sight at the 1st setting. Rifle sure shoots smooth, even better today. Revolver too. It's just way too much fun!

All the 1860 POIs look quite well-placed, per your design and firearm. Nice range results, RR.

Understood on the visibility of an 8" circle at 100 yards. The last two times I've been out with my SGC, I've found the same at 75 yards. That's about the max where I can at least get some fair target hits. I've changed now to a 16"x12" rectangle splash target. A little easier to bring into my sights, and I can mark it up quite well with the much smaller .22LR holes! You might think about your target size next time out, play a little with a larger one, and see if you can increase your fun.

My range allows orange clays to set on banks at 75 and 100 yards. I can get on target easier with them than paper for some reason.

RR, that's some good work, all the more so for having taken 3 months off. Really like that rifle target. Rule of thumb I've always used is that if you can keep them all in an 8" circle, you're ready to hunt deer with the rifle and technique used to shoot the target. Trust me, not many deer hunters could do what you did at 100 yards using a standing position and iron sights. That's very old school and a credit to that rifle and the way it was used, historically.

Oh, yeah, the 100 yards thing. That's the distance where things get really iffy for me, now, without a scope. Target sharpness really starts to plummet without some optical help.

Thank you so much. It was interesting that the 1st setting on the ladder sight sent them over the top. If we ever get a day with no wind, I'll put some big poster size paper on the 200 yd board and experiment.
