Sighting in the Heavy Artillery

Henry Color Cased Hardened 45-70 (H010CC) + Skinner "Reliable" receiver sight + Lyman 20 Front Globe sight + home-made 25yd range + good set of ear plugs = about as fun as you can have with your clothes on...

Finally got around to sighting in the new 45-70. Used Winchester 300g JHP at 25 yds. First three shots were 2" low. Turned the Skinner two full turns up and got the next three shots to fall "in the red".

Next I tried some Remington 405g SP at 25 yds. I was surprised that it shot about 2 " higher than the 300g - go figure?...Think I'll stick with the 300g for now - but I really need to get into reloading for this beast.
I really like this rifle - so much fun to see those big 45-70 cartridges rack into the breech, hear that big boom, feel that jolt and see those big casings eject. I think I may be a 45-70 junkee....

You can also add seeing those BIG holes in the paper with these big bores after you shoot them. Love seeing all that daylight coming through. Also very much a part of being a big bore junkie.

Yeah, heavier bullets do tend to print higher. See it all the time in my big bore single actions. I also tend to notice more recoil with those biggies. 405 grains is a truly a biggie. LOT of lead.

Love your Skinner/globe sight setup, by the way.

Shooting a nice 45-70 is some of the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

I think the only thing keeping me from buying that 45-70 is the nearly $2 per boom. But... my 223s aren't cheap to shoot either.

Ive always been fond of the 45-70. I have that same rifle. Buddie of mine liked mine so well he bought one. I now want another one. I havent been able to locate an all weather yet at a decent price but when I do I will have one of those for hunting this fall. Reloading for the 70 is actually pretty easy as the case is almost straight wall. Theres also lots of options out there for reloading. Brass can be had to at a reasonable price if one looks around. I have. A true Buffalo gun. The recoil was so powerful that I think it was actually fun to shoot. I just wouldn't want to do it all day.
