The Long Ranger

I just ordered one in .223 from my LGS for $825 plus tax. He said it might be a month or two before he gets one in.

Since its a hunting rifle and I don't hunt I'll just be shooting at paper out to 100 yards. Since offhand won't tell me how accurate the rifle is and you can never find a deer within 100 yards of a bench I might try kneeling or prone.

makes sense .... I was wondering if he was going to use it for paper punching or hunting .... as far as long range, that varies widely with me depending on many things .... type of firearm, type of target, type of sights, am I wearing my glasses

That is a nice rifle they remind me of he Browning BLR.
The .243 is a very accurate cartridge. Congratulations.
Most of us would probably like a range report when you get it.

I read somewhere that a long action version is in the works. I'd definitely be interested in a .30-06.

The Long Ranger should provide Browning with some healthy competition for the BLR.

I will be anxious to hear how it shoots. The .223 (you ordered)? is a fantastic accurate ctg & one that's easy to shoot well, I'm betting it'll shoot litty bitty groups.

I have more .223 rounds than 308 so that was a factor.

over the years most of us have developed an affinity for certain calibers .... when it comes to big game hunting fields with shooting ranges of 100 +/- yards, my preference is for 308 .... since 1970 my rifle of choice has been a Browning BLR .... as others have noted, the look of the soon to be released Henry H014-308 Long Rifle does remind one of the a BLR .... Henry claimS, "Accurate? You bet. This is the Best-In-Class levergun that leaves many bolt actions in the dust. If you’ve ever passed up a lever in favor of a bolt because of accuracy doubts, then doubt no longer. We didn’t pick the Long Ranger name out of a hat; if you need a tight-shooter that’ll reach out there, this rifle delivers." .... if that proves to be correct and I have every confidence that it will, they will have a major hit on their hands

Isn't that why many women have 100 pair of shoes! I see no reason that logic shouldn't apply equally to decisions regarding gun purchases.

Several things lead in favor of the .223 if you are not hunting not the least of which is available ammo (handloading pretty well takes care of this), cheaper to shoot, lack of recoil, quieter, & several others. Plus you said you have more ammo for it, it's an exellent varmint ctg. & will usually give 1/2" groups in a good rifle. Oh yes then there's the fun, the .223 is a VERY fun cartridge to shoot.
Congratulations again & please give us a range report, I'm probably not the only one who,s anxious to hear how the new Henry shoots.
