New member, new gun question

Hey all, new member here. I have very little experience with lever guns but purchased a BBsteel in .41 mag this last weekend. I haven't run to many through it yet but wonder if there is a break in before it cycles rounds reliably. I've tried 3 different ammo brands and all seem to hang up at times. Do I need to be more aggressive cycling the round? As said before I'm new to shooting a lever, the only other one I own is a Winchester Ducks Unlimited collector in 30-30 but I've never even opened the action on it. Any help would be appreciated. Welcome to the forum from CT.

Lever actions can occasionally be a little tricky and they sometimes take a while to break-in. The lever should be worked with a bit of authority, rather than slowly and gently and it's best to keep the rifle in an upright position when working it, rather than tilting it (as might happen if you're trying to watch the rounds move through the cycle).

If you continue to have issues, contact Henry Customer Service and tell them what is happening, how often it happens, what ammo you're using when it happens, and anything else that may provide them with enough information to help. For sure, you will be satisfied, though I know how frustrating it can be now.

I'm glad you joined the forum. You'll like it nearly as much as you'll come to like your new Henry.

first, welcome to our community, happy to have you with us .... your Henry 41 mag is a very capable rifle .... we have several members who have 41's, I'm sure they will be along with specific suggestions .... the suggestion to contact Henry customer service is a good one .... we are looking forward to hearing range reports

The general rule with lever guns is "work the lever like you mean it"

I own the Big Boy in 45C and it does not like me to weeny arm the lever. Rounds will hang up if I don't work the lever with authority. Welcome to the forum.

My suggestion would be to go the You Tube and watch Hickok 45 and MrGunsand gear. When those levers are used they are used with like RR says no weeny. Run them with authority. I have a 41 and have no issues with it at all as long as I do my part. No weeny on the lever. Al

Thanks all, I think I was to busy watching where the spent brass was going. Can't lose them, .41 is expensive and sometimes hard to come by around here! Maybe Henry will make .41 popular and the price of ammo will go down. Overall so far I love the gun and it's nice having a match to my S&W 659. Next time I go out I won't be a weene. LOL

I would imagine that operating the lever like you mean it will take care of you're problems.

But I did have a Henry Big Boy in .357/.38 that when I first started hand loading I bought some 115 grain cowboy rounds. They would cycle easily in my Marlin but they would hang up in my Henry. I found out through Henry customer support that they recommend no less than I believe 125 grain. It maybe 120 grain but I think 125 was the number. It never messed up after the proper grain was used. I sold that rifle off and kept the Marlin. Still Love the two Henry's that I do have though.

Not saying this is the problem but something else to look at.

If you're shooting for accuracy, and not trying to shoot fast, you can single load your rounds. When you do that, it's okay to baby the action. I do that with 30-30 and 35 Remington. That way my brass doesn't go flying all over the place.
