About 10 years ago I helped a doctor friend of my father put up a deer stand. It was an inconvenience that day, but I took the time to help him out of respect of my elders. He thanked me with a smile and a handshake which was good enough by me, but about a month later he tracked me down on the farm in his old Ford truck and handed me a small gift.

To say I was a bit taken back would be an understatement. I wasn't expecting anything from him. Isn't that the best kind of gift?As I fumbled to open up the brown package I couldn't help but be a little excited. Imagine my surprise when I discovered he had a handcrafted hunting knife built for me! The final touch was my own name engraved on the blade. Talk about an awesome gesture of kindness.

He made a point to say- "You use it. It's not to look at! It's a fine tool meant to be put through the paces!" Yes sir was the only thing I could think of to reply. Many moons later...I have ordered 4 more custom knives from Bob & Alice Legler. Bob makes the knives and Alice makes the great leather sheaths. They are as solid as the knives they make and fun to work with. Bob will sharpen any of his knives for free provided you ship them back to him with return postage included. Who does that anymore?

I have a drawer full of Buck knives, Old Timers, Case, and many others my kids have given me over the years- but my "go-to" knife for skinning and fish cleaning chores is now the Legler knife.

Hey, thanks for the kind comments! I do proudly wear my knife and it never fails to get a compliment when doing so. These knives hold an edge like no other. I almost hate to get them bloody...almost.

Hey Dave,

It is the 4" Breckenridge with the Chital Stag handle (9" overall length). It really is an awesome hunting knife. There are many choices in the leather I think and the way you have them stamped to further customise them. They really are lifetime knives! Happy hunting!
