JEBar doing what it takes to make your rifle comfortable is a good idea. I've found a good recoil pad makes a lot of difference & tames recoil quite well.

for me its closer to being a matter of need to than it is to being a matter of want to .... I have some cardiac issues which require me to take blood thinners .... blood thinners don't react well with strong recoil .... I'm just happy we have found a series of mods that works

understood and agree .... that's why I've moved more to shooting mostly from a benchrest

Got my .357/38 Big Boy Steel and put 100+ rounds with my 38 special pet load. What a nice little rifle. Balances well, shoots to point of aim, cycles well and has a nice trigger. Little to no recoil with 38's. Did not have any .357 to try...Oh well have to wait to next time. Shot standing off hand at 25 yards to see where it is shooting...5 shots; 2 were a little sloppy but I'm still getting used to the rifle.

For those who don't think FMJ 38 special won't make a good self defense round...

Almost forgot put these in the dirt bank at 50 yds and popped a few holes standing offhand. They are the plastic 6 pack tabs for our local microbrewed beer. I like to recycle.

I have a 45-70 marlin and the 450m.
I had to get the 450 ported to try and control the muzzle jump. And it did make a big improvement.

if things go as we hope, we plan to go by Mag-na-Port in Harrison Township, Michigan in late May/early June .... while there we plan to have them port our Henry 45-70 .... someday I'd like to have one of their Mag-na-brakes installed on one of my rifles but, to me, that simply wouldn't look right on a Henry

I have a henry 45-70. My model has the brass butt plate. I bought a Limbsaver recoil pad for it, for two reasons. 1. At the range I use it, have shot a couple dozen rounds in the summer with a t- shirt, my shoulder never bouthered me. 2. while hunting I can slip it on to protect the end of the stock if i need to set it down.

Great range report, Bugs. It must feel really satisfying to shoot a Big Boy for the first time and hit the target like you did - nice shooting.
