18,600 rounds of rimfire

Post by Sir Henry » Wed Aug 12, 2026 8:32 pm

I’ve been on an ammo buying kick recently. All of it has been standard velocity or slower. Not received yet so not pictured is a 5,000 round case of CCI Quiet-22.

Sir Henry -

I don't know if you are simply taking advantage of good prices or stockpiling in anticipation of possible future shortages but whichever, I think you are wise.

Anyone who gets caught short in the next ammo crisis has only himself/herself to blame. Don't ask me when the next ammo shortage will come but if history repeats itself, another shortage will come. And history will repeat itself.

I am not trying to be an alarmist, just cautious.

I have a couple rounds in the vault room. Plus reloading supplies when needed.
Pays to be prepared. I like to shoot.

The day I bought my first firearm back in 2013, a Henry H001 LR, I came home without any ammunition. Cabela's, like everywhere else, didn't have any 22LRs on the shelf. So, like lots of other folks, I started buying it every time it was available. After about a year or so, I had eleven thousand rounds. I still have 9500. Of course, if I had a backyard range, I'm sure I'd be shooting every day and I'd be buying the stuff by the case, too.

You’re not an alarmist, merely a realist. We all suffered the recent and past shortages and have learned to be prepared. Shoot on! :D

My closest friend is a retired attorney (don't hold that against me, he's a good man) and some time back, he asked me if I invested in precious metals, such as gold and/or silver. I showed him my wedding band and told him that is the only gold I have but I do invest in other precious metals. He said something to the effect of "What? Platinum?". I said no, brass, lead and copper. He looked at me closely and said they are not precious metals. I said they certainly are, particularly if times get extremely bad and I explained the problems encountered during ammo shortages. Self-defense, barter and sale are all possibilities.

He began to put some amount of rimfire ammo and a bit of centerfire pistol ammo aside after that.

And I didn't charge him $400/hour for the advice.

Nice stash, SH. I counted mine last fall and I had 18k+.
But, with a lot more variety.

Enjoy that range, sir.

I know some forums insist a person stay on subject but most of us here don’t care.

I’ve shot about 1,000 rimfire in the last two days. At that rate I’ll be out in a month. Well not really because I already had twice that much and I won’t keep this pace up. I suspect I shoot 10K rimfire a year on average. So I have a 4-6 year stash now.

I just cancelled the 5,000 round case of Quiet-22 ammo at 12 cents and ordered two 6,600 round cases of the Remington Standard V at 7 cents. My last range post said 6 cents but with tax and shipping it was 7.

New total is 26,800.

You must have bought them all. Went shopping and the places I checked were out of stock.
