Re: Boot Hill Shooting Range
The new part of the range is illuminated in the morning sun. I’ll most appreciate that in the fall and spring. I doubt I can get to the firing line in the dead of winter. I’m still waiting on half the parts to get here. Gotta love Amazon and ebay.

More work being done on the range. I’m still waiting on hangers and gongs. When everything is done I’ll rattle can the shiny parts and colorized the gongs.

Re: Boot Hill Shooting Range
I’m experimenting with how to hang gongs and now traps. This way also works but might be too much weight for the bar.

Re: Boot Hill Shooting Range
I received a few more items however its very hot and humid now so I can only work ten minutes at a time.
I received the top bracket for this hanger frame and the bear gong.
This one is sagging too much in the ten foot span so I’ll add a center brace. Here its just leaning up against the bar.
Here’s the difference in the two styles. The one on the left is portable if you dont drive them into the ground. The style on the right must be driven to stand up.
The traps on top of this hanger frame were bending it so I moved them.

Re: Boot Hill Shooting Range
All my parts are here and it’s now way to smokey out to work. Yesterday afternoon I did some work however I still have lots more to do. The first picture shows how the two sections are at a 90 degree angle. I have another hanger and a half dozen gongs to set out. Some of the traps and gongs are just sitting on the ground.

I like the different colors of your gongs. All look great against the greenery.

Orange is rimfire only and yellow is centerfire pistol and rimfire. I have two gongs that can handle rifle caliber but only at 100 yards and the farthest I can shoot is 50 yards. They will eventually go to the upper range where I will be able to shoot at 100 yards when i build a tower.

Re: Boot Hill Shooting Range
I ran out of orange so used red. I just hung them quickly as the smoke gets to me fast. I’ll put a short chain and hang them lower.
I still have two more single hangers coming.

That’s a great idea for instant id of the proper target. Several years ago I had a 22wmr. We were shooting rimfire spinner targets with long rifles and I forgot to inform the group to not shoot the rimfire targets with the wmr. My son took a shot with it and we were impressed how dented the spinner was from the wmr.Sir Henry wrote: ↑Wed Jul 15, 2026 10:20 amOrange is rimfire only and yellow is centerfire pistol and rimfire. Re: Boot Hill Shooting Range
All my traps (not shown on this post) are rated for 22WMR at 100 yards but not at 50. Same with the spinners (also not shown). All the gongs are rated for centerfire for 25 yards. I painted some red only for contrast. There is enough yellow gongs to shoot at. Most of these hits have been with rimfire.Hatchdog wrote: ↑Thu Jul 16, 2026 10:40 amThat’s a great idea for instant id of the proper target. Several years ago I had a 22wmr. This is the best sounding gong.
I think its because the wooden post has an AR500 protector on it that the gong hits plus its a medium sized one and 1/4”. Others are 3/8 and 1/2”.
Both these were photographed from the same distance so you can see the size variation.
This smaller one is he hard to hit but it really swings. Some of the larger ones barely move.
