Question re. .45 Colt ammo

Yep, as those above have stated start simple. No need to buy stuff to increase the rate of loading at this time. Like everybody I started on a single stage press (RCBS JR for me). As my skills and knowledge increased I branched out a little bit. I have a Lee 4 hole turret press but it still loads one cartridge at a time unlike a progressive. I’ve also gone to an RCBS powder dispenser/scale that dispenses into a scale pan a pre-determined charge. It’s very accurate and does save time while dispensing. But these are items to think about in the future, for now stay with the beam scale and take your time. Oh, and enjoy yourself.

I saw that baffle on the RCBS site and was wondering. Now I know. It makes perfect sense!
Again, lots of info to read thru and comprehend. To be honest, I hate to be a bloody beginner. But, what gives?

My plan is to order the RCBS hand priming tool and get large pistol primer from my LGS.
From there, I am hoping to prime the first cases.

Boy, am I late to this party. Ted124, you're getting a ton of very good info here, and Mags is hitting it out of the park.
.45 Colt is probably my favorite handgun/rifle round to load. I'll share my load: 8.0gr Unique, 250gr coated cast rnfp bullet, Starline cases and Win LPP.
You need any other help, we are here to help in any way we can. Enjoy the ride, but, don't be in a hurry.

Got to load your own though, I load from 200gr to 325gr with a few different powders, Unique and Red dot mostly.

Mounted the press couple of days ago, onto my saw horse work bench.
No wobble, no shake. Table/bench is solid. 50" x 22" will give me a good idea how much work space I will need.
Moved it over to the longer wall. If things get more permanent, I'd like to go up to 60" width.



Ordered a RCBS Carbide set off ebay.



"like new" condition, charged a bit much on shipping, but still comes out about 25% less than a new set.
I am planning to use Redding's lube wax. However, with new brass I may not have to do re-sizing.
In any case, I am aware of the need for lube. Just have to know when and how.

I am planning to use a dipper for the powder measure to start.
A solid base for the scale. Might place it on a benchtop rack to have it at eye level.

Just need to find a good funnel.

Great looking revolvers (& rifles) spotted a Ruger Black Hawk .45 Colt/.45 ACP conversion and came across Taylor's & Company.
Get 's me thinking. The old D/A S&W swing-out cylinder guy may want to keep an eye out for a Model 25.

The RCBS introduction video made it clear:
Initial investment into re-loading equipment, may be approx. similar to your next firearms purchase.
I can take that to heart and skip another gun purchase for the remainder of this year.

For this caliber you will not need to lube. Your die set is a carbide set. The sizing die has a hardened carbide ring near the mouth of the die. You will see it if you look into the die. Only works for straight wall cases such as the 45 colt. Bottle neck rifle cases (and a few pistol cases) do require lube. Great you’re getting your stuff set up. Let the fun begin.
