Picked up a ruger american 22 wmr

Post by DsGrouse » Sun May 31, 2026 8:50 am

;)

Found a nice one, nib at a local LGS. I've been looking for a 22WMR that has a threaded barrel. I was holding out for Henry's new X model, but they are harder than hen's teeth to get your hands on one right now. 1 per dealer allocation, or so I am told. The Ruger Americans, on the other hand, have done me well.

I wanted either a bolt or a lever so I could more easily recover the brass. The brass i can de-rim and turn into .243, .264, and .264 jackets.

I need to pick up a scope, rings, and a base. I'll shoot this for a bit, but honestly, I'll probably drop it in an MDT field stock. Stay tuned for photos and range report.

I've been out of it for 7 to 8 weeks, left shoulder and left neck injury, then a 5-day skate deal with the wife, 10 days of right side neck injury leading into 10days of fever.

I'm feeling better now, and yesterday was the first day in a while when I could be out and about for a bit.

Congratulations. I’m thinking of getting one in 22LR. My friend has one and we shot it last week.

I think you will be pleased. Of the three .22 WMR rifles I own, two are Ruger American Rimfires. One is an 18" barrel, synthetic stock, no iron sights rifle with a Vortex scope and the other is a 22" barrel, stainless finish, walnut stock, iron sight rifle with a Leupold scope.

Although neither action can be called "butter smooth" and probably never will be, both function well and both are quite accurate with CCI MaxiMag 40 gr. JHP ammo. I buy this ammo in the 125 round "milk carton" packs at Walmart and I have laid in a good supply. Also, I did buy a 500 round brick of this ammo from either LuckyGunner or SGAmmo. Just in case.

My third .22 WMR rifle is a Ruger 77/22 International and it too prefers the same ammo as the two RAR's.

That said, I started with a selection of about a dozen different .22 WMR brands, bullet styles and bullet weights in my search for accuracy in the above rifles, and was pleased when an economical brand proved to the the best all around.

I did put a Ruger flash suppressor on the 18" barrel rifle not so much to hide muzzle flash but so that it would fit into the cradles when it stood in my gun case.

Tell us what your results are.

Now I have to research Henry's X model you mentioned in your post.
