When I was 17 my father came home from work and told me there was a 1948(?) International pickup truck in a coworkers field that could be had for free. My older brother an I went to look at it. It had a bit of red primer on it and four flat tires. It had all the glass, seat, and no through rust. We went back the next day and aired up the tires (they held), topped off the brake fluid (brakes worked) and we towed it home and parked it in 1/2 of the garage. Following day we put a battery on it, poured some gas in the carb and it fired up. No title but I was not concerned. I could see myself in this bright red truck tooling around town but I wasn't real sure on how to start restoring. 2 days later I was told I had to get it gone because my father did not want it in his garage next to his boat project so I gave it to a man that had a service station. I have still not totally forgiven him.

My step dad was a mechanic and he always bring cars home to "test" drive after working on them. This was back in the 60's. He worked in an independent shop. One day he brought home a Studebaker Avanti . Love at first site. To young to drive it. He took me out for a 'test" drive out on some back roads outside of Sioux Falls. Sucker was fast I lusted for one but never acquired one.

The Avanti was such a cool looking car. I regularly walked past one in the early 60's parked in same Dr.'s space at a city hospital when I was an elementary school kid.

After seeing this, and others, I've never lusted after anything else. To be able to bust down the lane with the throttle wide open feels almost sexual.

When I returned to the World after my all expenses paid vacation to SE Asia, I had a 68 GTO convertible waiting for me at my local Pontiac dealer. Wish I still had that beauty.

I’ll take a Zip’s Triple Double Deluxe. It was a double beef, double bacon and double ham with triple cheese. The one on Division was my favorite.

We had a place in Richmond called Bill's Bar B Que, a drive in with curb service. There were two locations, one on the County Line at Henrico County on Broad Street and the second several miles down into the city just off Broad Street beside the Diamond where the ball games were played. In the 50s and 60s, the cars would make the loop from one to the other, up and back, up and back... Showing off the cars and the girls in the passenger seats. Both locations had big signs. No motorcycles, except Law Enforcement. My stepfather watched the movie Hollywood Knights with me, and told me they would burn a tank of gas each weekend running the Bill's loop.

In addition to bbq, Bill's was famous for fresh squeezed lemonade and limeade, and keylime pie. Awesome burgers as well. The loop was a thing of the past by the mid 70s when I hit high school, traffic was too thick and the traffic cops were to strict. We cruised rural roads, and hung out on farms.

I saw a post on facebook this week from a group called the Spokane Riverside Cruisers. The post showed a map of the cruise route going thru downtown Spokane. It’s the exact same route I used to cruise back in the mid 70’s. In the 1980’s the PD shut it down to cruising causing the kids to pick another location that wasn’t nearly as good as Riverside. Riverside is a four lane street that we cruised in both directions with turn around at each end. Fun to see the cars going the opposite direction. Nice to see that’s it’s back!

That's interesting. Ours was also on a street named Riverside, but it was a oneway with the oneway return on Central. The northern hangout spot was a place called Jack's Driveup. The south Cubby's.

Dream car??? Well back in 1970 the car a lot of 16 year olds dreamed about was cruising the streets in a new 1970 Hemicuda! Thru my brother who was 20 at the time with a good job,I got to live that dream and today wish I could have held on to it after he passed away last year.
Summer of 1970 was like a dream enjoying the cruising and stoplight drag runs in the evenings!

My friend just sold this one. Luckily I had it to drive for a bit. Photo was a sunset drive with the wife last summer. He actually raffled it off, so for about a month I got to pretend it would be mine for my $200 ticket. Original numbers matching 340 4 speed. It might not be a Hemi, but it turned a lot of heads!

We drive past that Zips all the time. I’ve never gone in though. There’s one in Colville that is closer to me. We are usually looking for good Mexican if we eat out in Spokane. Tacos El Sol on Division is the best I’ve found.

Did you (or Hatch) ever go to the big car show in Coeur D’Alene? I’ve been once. It’s a pretty good one if you go to the Saturday night cruise.

Cruising Wenatchee Ave was one of the few weekend activities we had in the late 60's and early 70's. Nothing like the craziness during Apple Blossom Festival, just high school kids stopping at different parking lot groups and BS'ing and trying to find out where the parties were. Dennys was about the only place open late to get a cup of coffee or something to eat, everything else was closed by 10 or 11. Drive down the Ave past 10 now and other than a few bars and taverns it's dead, don't know where the high school are hanging out now.

I’ve got 3 “dream” rigs. None are cars.

The 70 Series Land Cruiser double cab on the beach is a friend from Australia’s truck. It would be my “practical” choice. Twin turbo V8 diesel manual transmission from the factory, 1 ton running gear and front and rear lockers.


The 1946 Mercury was on BAT a few years ago. It had a 460 in it. Not practical, but man, it’s cool!


And the “realistic” dream. My friends turbo diesel manual BJ45 Land Cruiser. We have an understanding that I will buy it some day. I just need a spare $30,000 for a two seater…

Cruising was pretty much killed by the time I was in high school. When my wife and I were dating and after we were married, our second-favorite pastime was driving. Seeing what was over the far blue mountains.

My shoulder has had me laid up for a week or more. I took the local back roads to Greentop (LGS) yesterday. Normally, a 30 min drive. An hour of new backroads, 5 min in the store, an hour back. It was glorious to hear and feel the car purr.

We did the Coeur d’alene cruise one year when we still had our 68 Mustang. Also the Lost in the Fifties cruise in Sandpoint. The Cda cruise was much better as you could continue to cruise as long as you wanted. The Sandpoint cruise was only one very long lap. Here’s Mrs hatchdog and the Mustang staged for the beginning of the Sandpoint cruise.
