The Ring School is for sale
This is the school that I see from my front window. The listing doesn’t mention the dry rot and the fact it needs to be torn down. It would be much cheaper to tear it down and rebuild it. I was given prior notice and declined to make an offer. To me it’s an $8K property.

It comes up on Google Maps as a Historical Place. Tearing it down probably isn't an option. Kinton School House near here is a historical place. It couldn't be torn down and nobody stepped up to restore and maintain it. The roof and bell tower has since caved in.

It will fall down in four to six years.Mags wrote: ↑Wed May 28, 2025 11:36 pmIt comes up on Google Maps as a Historical Place. Tearing it down probably isn't an option. Zillow post shows it’s under contract.

A lot of money for a building and a small amount of land for something that asks the question "what would a person do with it?" If it has that much historical value, the county should buy it and restore it. The stripped out interior also diminishes the historical value. I wouldn't buy it either. I also notice the "Under Contract" posting. Keep us posted on what happens to it.

I texted my neighbor congratulating her on buying it. She said thanks. I was really guessing. Her father attended it and her mom and aunt taught there plus she owns the forty north of me which also borders it. For her it really makes sense.

A little paint and a shingle or two and it will be good to go.

Never mind the massive dry rot on the foundation. It can be restored but it’s not the Mona Lisa.clovishound wrote: ↑Thu May 29, 2025 1:16 pmA little paint and a shingle or two and it will be good to go.![]()

Re: The Ring School is for sale
I was being sarcastic. Basically an "It'll buff out" comment.
It does seem a shame when old historic buildings are allowed to fall into rot and ruin. But, they can't all be saved, and, I guess, not all should be.
I remember the Ormond Hotel in Ormond Beach, Florida, in the area I grew up. It was built in the late 1800s and purchased a few years later by Henry Flagler, who ran, and expanded it. At the time, it was the largest wooden structure in the world. It went through several iterations over time. In the 1980s it was a retirement home that was finally condemned as unsafe. There were several attempts to find someone who would save the structure, but eventually it was torn down.

I wonder what she paid. Tax value is $33k. Sure wouldn’t spend more than that. What is bare land worth per acre near you?

Re: The Ring School is for sale
Acreage goes for maybe $5K an acre for under five acres and larger tracks will go for $1 to $2K. I would pay $8 to $12K for this as it does have a well and power going to it. Sewage was just dumped into the field which you can’t do anymore. Even though it has a well you can’t pump water if it doesn’t have a sewer/septic.
The place only has value to me or the gal that owns the adjoining land. For anyone else it’s almost worthless.
Homes around here are currently cheap compared to the national average. A $250K house here might go for $500K to $1M in Madison. So why pay $60K for 1.6 acres when you can get 5 to 10 acres for the same price. The only reason I can give is you get a million dollar view of my house.

I think a new owner would be disappointed in the view. Google Maps shows trees blocking the view to your house. They'd have to cut some down to get that amazing view.

Maybe trim a few. They have a log cabin a few hundred yards away which has a better view and where they spend their time. It’s a summer cabin and I see them a few weekends in the summer. The seller and buyer are cousins. The buyers mom and dad attended the school and her aunt (the sellers mom) taught there.
