I put up a tower antenna

Post by Sir Henry » Thu Oct 17, 2024 6:03 pm

I’ve been wanting to do this for a couple of years. Then a couple months ago a neighbor said he had a tower and antenna to give away. Well today was the day we tore it down and put it up.

First taking it down. That bottom one is 18’. The top of the tower is 40’.

The antennas off and only the tower remains.

Two 10’ sections off and working on the third.

My job was to haul it home.

I walked up the hill to be even with the antenna and aimed the camera to 145 degrees which is the direction of Wausau. Instead of the hill I can see the far hill.

Pretty sure that will be tall enough to stay above our Wisconsin snow. Never know, though.

No rotor as Wausau has all the stations. If I get Park falls or Eau Claire I will just get duplicates. I just rescanned and then eliminated cartoons and shopping and ended up the twenty-something channels. I don’t like most TV but do watch Packers games and movies. Right now I’m watching 3:10 to Yuma on Outlaw.

So I get ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and a dozen rerun stations and four classic movie channels.

I just rescanned and made a list of stations. Then I went through and deleted duplications, cartoons and shopping channels. What I’m left with is 31 stations.

Nice tower setup Gene! Think I need something like that just to get NBC 12 which is about 27 miles away. Hate the digital signals since you either get it or nothing and the range is short. Back in analog days I could bring in channels from Tidewater area about 90 miles away but now not so and it didn't have to always be a perfect picture to get it.

My brother has a 40 footer also.
I used to climb it every year or so for a number of years.
Had a 5'x8' Confederate flag that I would replace for him.

I found two more duplicates so now only get 29 different stations. The best part is that four of those stations are movie channels.

The antenna was on the porch roof so you can see it’s now much higher. High enough to clear the hill and trees.

It’s aimed at 145 degrees which is the exact bearing from my house to Rib Mountain where the transmission towers are located.

I put this up in the new shop. It will do while I complete the shop. At least I can watch the Packers while I work.

I put up a more permanent antenna on the RVport yesterday. It replaces one I had in the front window.

Interesting looking TV antenna Gene. How many channels do you get?

It’s an omnidirectional antenna and I get 33 stations although many are duplicates with one being standard broadcast and one being HD. I get about a dozen channels taking away the dupes and shopping channels. Most important I get the Packers and today will get the Indy 500 which is why I put it up yesterday.

We were too far away from everything for an antenna to work. We had to get starlink. But at least we have a few channels now. Good for you Sir... Good for you.

I’m about 45 miles from the towers which is about the max because of the earth’s curvature. The towers are on Rib Mountain which is the second highest point in Wisconsin. I’m on Timms Hill which is the highest point in Wisconsin.

I see your installer is wearing a Stormy Kromer cap. That's got to add at least a few extra miles to your reception area.
