Mt. Spurr, AK threatening to erupt again

Last time was in '92. Caused a lot of problems in the Anchorage area due to ashfall.

They will. They know how to handle it up there, but it will be a giant PITA, just like '92, unless it blows it's top like it did 5000 years ago. May cause my favorite gun leather maker some problems. He's just across the bay from Anchorage in Wasilla.

Reminds me of 1980 and Mt. St. Helens here in Washington State. The waiting and the media and scientific buildup was really interesting as was the eruption itself. Over here in eastern Washington all we got was an ash shower that lasted for hours and complete darkness in the middle of the day. Of course for the folks in the immediate area it was disastrous.

Over here in eastern Washington all we got was an ash shower that lasted for hours and complete darkness in the middle of the day. Of course for the folks in the immediate area it was disastrous.

I was in Japan when St. Helen's blew, but had family in the Seattle area. Got pretty messy there.

I was in Seattle when it blew. Seattle was barely affected although you could clearly see what was happening. Most of the damage was within 50 miles all around and several hundred miles to the east. I’ve climbed all the volcanoes in Washington and all smell like sulfur near the summits. Rainier has steam caves in the summit crater that goes down several hundred feet. And there is a warm lake under the ice at the top.

Wenatchee is about 180miles straight line distance to Mt St. Helens, we didn't get very heavy ash fall, around a ¼ to a ½inch. They got a lot more just to the south of us and they say it got as dark as night in Yakima.

I went to a tennis get together that morning and none of us had heard about the eruption, couldn't see any ash falling but after awhile started seeing little marks where the balls were hitting the courts. Someone went in and heard about the eruption on the radio so that ended our tennis for the day.

We got more than an inch here from Mt St Helens. We're Southwest about 55-60mi. There are places in the garden, where you dig through the bark dust, there is an inch or so of compressed ash. I imagine when it fell fluffy it was thicker.
