The right PC Carbine

I have considered for quite sometime the purchase of a PCC. I don't, yet, have a pistol to match to. In your opinion, which of the available rifles are good shooters, easy to maintain and carry? I probably want to stick with 9mm.

I've not bought anything lately and looking for a lifetime purchase. They don't come in 357, so I'll settle. Thanks for your interest.

My thoughts....if you already have a 9mm pistol go with the 9 carbine. I like 45 ACP and at the time I bought a PC carbine Ruger had not yet brought out their PC in that caliber so I bought a High Point Carbine and then modified it with a much better stock. I don't own any 9mm guns.

Probably gonna get some different opinions here for sure but Ive shot the S&W FPC in 9mm and I dont care for it because the bolt handle will hit you in the cheek if you dont hold it just right. Its also to much like an AR with a straight stock. If you are use to shooting a rifle more you cant beat the Ruger PC carbine. I have 2 one in 40 and one in 9mm. The 40 is really accurate. But my 9 does a good job. Get ready to spend some money on ammo because you go through some 9mm pretty darn fast.

My match up in .45acp: A Glock 21 MOS, and a Ruger semi-auto LC Carbine (same magazines for both). My other matched pair is in .41mag: a Ruger NMBH 6 1/2", and a Henry BBS Carbine. My other match up is in .22lr: Ruger 1022, and Buckmark Camper. My other match up is .22wmr: Henry Frontier (Rifle, not Carbine), a Ruger Precision Rimfire, and a Heritage birdshead revolver with both .22lr & wmr cylinders. My other match up is 9mm: Oops, only got 9mm pistols, no 9mm long gun. Guess I'll have to fix that oversight.

I used to own one of the original Ruger PCC’s. I put a red dot on it. It shot okay at 50 yards but at the time I was involved with chasing little holes in paper targets and I just couldn’t deal with the groups at 50 yards off a bench so I sold it. Just another firearm sale that I now regret. It shot just fine for what it was.

Just another firearm sale that I now regret. It shot just fine for what it was.

I also had an AR-9 (Palmetto as I recall) and it was a good riddance when I sold it. Shot ball ammo fine but didn’t like plated or hollow point ammo.

I've been rolling thoughts of one around in my head for a while too. Here's what will influence my decision.

#1: I'd like something that I already load for, something that I have brass and bullets for, and can find components for easily and inexpensively.

#2: It would be great if said PCC used magazines from a handgun I already have, and I could use them interchangeably.

#3: I'd like something that is light, has a shorter barrel, and emphasis given to portability and functional reliability.

#4: This PCC should be able to keep hits at least as close as my Henry BBS in .357 at similar distances. If not, I'll end up using the lever more than the PCC.

An interesting option is the Mech Tech conversion units that you use on your existing pistol just like changing out the slide. I like that concept, but my 1911 has a frame mounted dot, and the other pistols don't have a Mech Tech unit to match.

Have you been watching the news today? Prices of just about everything will be going up - a lot. I wouldn't advise putting off your decision for too long.

The Ruger uses Glock and Ruger magazines. Reloading for a PCC is almost a wash with todays prices of powder bullets ect. I realize some guys just like to reload and I get that. Some guys cast their own bullets I get that to. But if you dont cast you can buy 9mm about as cheap as you can load for just shop deals on ammoseek or there are several ammo sellers that have discount member programs.

I have both Ruger PC (two actually) and Henry Homesteader. They are about the same in performance. I don't use the takedown feature of Ruger for anything.

I prefer the Homesteader but for no particular reason. It just feels nicer.
