what mods/upgrades/adjustments

Post by JEBar » Fri Nov 25, 2016 9:20 pm

so far as I know there is nothing wrong with our Henry H010CC 45-70 .... by that I mean, from the moment it was taken out of the box it functioned as designed .... smooth action, more accurate than I am  , reliable .... my first and only modification has been to install a 3X9 Nikon scope .... over the years I've come to know and rely on a gunsmith in Texas and plan to take it to him in January when we are down there to have a mercury recoil suppressor installed in the stock --- http://www.mercuryrecoil.com/ --- in addition, I plan to ask him to take look at the OEM recoil pad and if he has a better one to switch it out .... in June when we are due to be in Michigan I plan to take it to Mag-na-port --- http://magnaport.com/rifle.html --- for them to port its barrel .... I've seen a number of reports on this forum about folks having trigger jobs and other things done to their Henry rifles ....

QUESTION : what upgrades/mods/adjustments do you feel would be good to have a gunsmith perform on a Henry (45-70)

The only thing I have done to my Big Boy steel in .357 is a scope. I've been thinking about a large lever loop for it, however.

Of course, the .357 doesn't have the recoil issue that the 45-70 does. While the trigger on my BB isn't what I would call a target trigger, it is a good trigger IMO and I wouldn't consider having a trigger job done on it. This is not a sub moa rifle anyway. I will pull out my rifle caliber bolt action with a target trigger for small groups at distance. Of course, everyone has a different threshold on trigger needs and wants.

I don't Have the Henry 45-70. But I have had 3 others . I have used slip-on recoil pads if I was going to do a lot of shooting at the range.
But just shooting factor ammo, never needed anything added to it.
All my 45-70's shot well , with one or two makes of ammo. Just have to try different ammo and gr.wts.
If your shooting. Hot. Loads all the time. Then that's diff.

firing Cowboy Action Loads in our 45-70 ain't bad at all .... as you note, hot loads can be a different story .... being on blood thinning meds motivates me to work on reducing recoil .... hence most of the mods made/planned ....
