I caught a mouse

This photo was from a couple of years ago, no problems with mice. Down to 3 of these plus a couple of others, still see no signs of mice around my place.

Weimaraners. Poster children for “prey drive”. Cats would last mere seconds in my house.

My Dachshund loved cats, but our experiment with a kitten was short lived due to excessive mind loss by Weimaraners. (No kitten was harmed during testing).

I guess it depends on the dog. A friend of mine had a huge German Shepard that loved kittens. When their mama cat had kittens he would treat them like they were his. Funny to watch him gently carrying a kitten around with it's head entirely in his mouth. He had another German Shepard that hated cats but one day he found out how much damage a cats claws can do when it's cornered and has no option but a full on attack, the dog shook the cat off it's face and turned around and ran.

I bet my cat would do that. She at lease is built like she could. At thirteen plus pounds my Little Girl isn’t little.

I caught a second mouse. This time with a different trap. The first one was the typical design and mice would steal the food and not trip it. The new trap was a new design and this mouse barely got a nibble when he set it off. It took several days before I caught it.

I use peanut butter on traps out in the shop and have had good luck. I guess licking it all off the trap eventually springs it.

I have one trap that when they enter to get the Peanut Butter, it electrocutes them!
I love it.

I caught 6 recently.
While visiting my our grand kids in California, some my mice got into our car leaving a few mouse turds on the center console. Never saw the mice while we were there.
The night we got home they exited the car into the garage. Took a few days but we caught them all. Used glue traps.

If you think mice are bad pack rats are a lot worse. Had a family in my shed once and they love to collect shiny objects. I was able to shoot the 2 males with my pellet gun and got mom in a rat trap after a couple of tries. She had a nest with quite a few babies that I disposed of. They must be fairly rare around here, only had them the one time. I don't know if a house cat would attack one, the female was quite large.

Pack rats are also hitch hikers.
Friend of mine has a winter home in AZ and a summer home in the far north of California not too far from the Oregon border. He unknowingly brought a stowaway home from AZ in his truck. Small items in the garage kept disappearing. He eventually figured it out and trapped it.

When we first took possession of my wife’s uncle’s property back in 2008 we had a pack rat in the shop. Not sure why/how it disappeared but once we got the place cleaned up it wasn’t around anymore. We are having the building treated by a bug exterminator that also does our home and the results are amazing. Prior we had dozens of yellow jacket nests and a horrible mouse infestion. Every spring when I would first open up the building there would be thousands of bug wings all over. (Something was eating the bugs leaving the wings???) That was in addition to thousands of mouse droppings all over everything. The exterminator sprays the building and has placed four commercial grade mouse bait traps inside and outside. The last two years since they have been treating the building when I open it up in the spring I have NO droppings or wings. Amazing.

When I bought my last new vehicle, the Frontier, I took it in for service and a few days later got a terrible odor in the truck, no more "New Car Smell.". Miss T went out with the vacuum and started checking, and found a large mouse had been pinched under a fold down seat in the rear, now stinking up the place. We kept the windows up and the truck locked when parked, so it had to have occurred at the dealer...

"Couldn't have happened here," said the arrogant service manager, "unless the techs are actively working in the interior of the vehicle, the doors remain closed at all times. It's Policy." So I turned and walked into the bay.

Huge dealership, huge maintenance bay, dozens of individual stalls for techs. Might be policy, but nearly every vehicle in the stalls, had a tech under the hood, and the empty interiors at least the driver's door open.

"Means nothing," the service manager said. "Nothing I can do for you."

He offered neither advice nor suggestions. I told him it was no problem, No problems at all. We would happily find another dealer for sales and service.

Looked also looked on the internet and found a spray that cleared up the odor in two treatments.

We keep our vehicles closed up tight. But mice still get in. Found that the body drain holes are just big enough for mice to get through. Also found them coming in through the cabin air intake. They'd enter through the vent at the base of the windshield or rain drain behind the front wheels, make their way to the cabin air filter, chew through it, get into the cabin air ducting and crawl out of the AC and heater openings.

Try the electric battery traps. Have had great success with them.

I’ve had good luck with The Better Mousetrap on the left. The Victor wouldn’t release and the mice just ate the bait.

My wife had me plant peppermint plant in the decorative stone between our evergreen bushes. It is a prolific grower and just keeps spreading. Rodents don't like it and avoid that area. When some of the mint grows too high just cut it back and throw on the lawn and grind up with the lawn mower. We didn't have a rodent problem before the planting but it was a added bonus

I think using peppermint as a deterrent can be hit or miss. Doesn't bother mice here. Seen them in the midst of it grooming themselves.
