I too have purposely bought my homes in areas where I could build my own ranges and control who shot on them. When I was shooting competition, I didn't offer advice unless asked, unless match directors asked me to watch one end of the line or the other.

As a firearms instructor, I could have become that guy, but wouldn't, unless I saw something unsafe.

I have my own primitive range. County noise ordinance limits operation 7am to 10pm. Typically though I shoot mid morning to late afternoon when I shoot.

I can shoot right here at home and the neighbors do but I enjoy the friendship I get
at the two gun clubs I belong to. Lots of laughing, shooting both lead and bull, and
coffee.

I like shooting out my back door especially in the winter. Last fall I pushed up another berm 200 yards from the house. I can currently shoot at it from 50 yards and that means I have to walk 150 yards to the line. Too close to drive to and a lot of walking to carry everything. Once my garage is built I can store targets and such in it and only have to carry the firearms.

I’ve only have to tell people twice they were being unsafe. Once was in Ephrata when they were pointing firearms everywhere and were handing them during a ceasefire. I also told them the official rules stated English was the only language allowed on the range. They packed up and left. The other time was a guy started to handle a firearm during a ceasefire. I yelled at him and then started to walk over. He yelled “lesson learned” and I gave him the thumbs up and walked back. He was with his family and needed to be told but not the lecture. Later I talked to them and let some of the women shoot my rimfire. They only had centerfire and the women weren’t having any fun. I later heard them saving “buy what that guy has”.

I have had many good conversations with others on the range but I never interfere unless asked. I did get a butt chewing once as I had placed two targets vertically on the 50 yard stand when the ground was frozen. The RO told me that my angle of fire to the bottom target would strike the hard ground and could cause a ricochet. Great advice that I was happy to comply with.

When I first started shooting competition after I left the Corps, I started shooting PPC at local level matches. We had a few female shooters, but not that many and I was concentrating on improving my skillset and pretty much minded my own business. There were those who made it a point to try and tell them what to do or "Help Them," Whether they wanted it or not, but I concentrated on my goals. The match director was my "Rabbi" in LE and he appreciated my focus.
(I might have earned a Gibbs slap without it.)

After a season at the local level, he moved me up to State Level. There were several Notable Female shooters at that level, and I made the mistake of making a comment to my "Rabbi" on two of them. He quickly put me in my place. (Give me a break, I was NEW to the game and learning... )

The first was a youngish 30 year old who showed up in jeans, a plain sweat shirt, and black ball cap. She unloaded her gear bag, then donned a fancy tooled leather gunbelt, that she buckled in the back so she could wear speedloaders all across the front. The tooling was beautiful and was entwined roses and leaves that extended to the speedloader pouches and the holster, and the grip on the PPC gun was carved with a very nicely done rose. I said something stupid like, "With a rig like that she better be able to shoot."

My guy smacked me in the back of the head, and said, "She's a Distinguished Shooter and a lead instructor at the FBI academy... try WATCHING before you open your yap son. That way you just stand around and LOOK stupid, instead of sounding stupid as well." He was not happy with me that day. I learned a valuable lesson, which I passed onto my students for years. You don't want to judge folks you don't know simply on appearance.

Turned out the other female I commented on was Married to one of my Favorite Authors, whose books I had read over and over and one had been made into a movie starring Hackman, Swayze, Fred Ward, and Randall Tex Cobb. She was a pretty good competitor too and placed well in the Civilian Category. Luckily my comments were complimentary. I would not have wanted to make HIM angry.


I was always happy to help any competitor who asked for it, but made it a point to keep my opinions to myself unless approached. We've all been there. The worst thing is when trying to teach someone and the Range Guy shows up and interferes.

This is also me, but I like being neighborly and only shoot during daylight hours and never on Sunday (although my county may have a noise ordinance after 11 PM).

Also, although interesting, I've never been to a range before, inside or outside.

I have shot after dark on my private range in the past, for training. I worked evening and midnight patrol shifts by choice, so most of my "work" was in the dark. I tried to insure I got in training in the dark.

I would call dispatch before I started and after I finished in case they got calls, but the Sheriff's Department knew me, knew my range, and had no problem with the training. The Park Police sometimes used my range for refresher training for individual officers. The Chief would call to see when I was available.

I was blessed to have him guide me thru my new career after I left the Corps. He was a wise man then, and still is. In his early 80s and still teaching, still shooting and competing, AND winning. He is still reloading, tweeking loads, and volunteering at various range events. AND is still advising young officers though he has been retired from active LE duties for nearly two decades. Wise Sergeants will send troubled shooters out to HIS private range away from official Department Eyes for quiet counseling that has saved a number of careers over the years.

No ordnances here. I can occasionally hear a neighbor shoot at night. He is far enough away and over the hill so I can barely here him shooting. I shoot mainly SV rimfire and no one here’s me shooting. I do have rules on my range.

I can see three dwellings from my home and they are either unoccupied or occupied a few times a year. The county I live in has between 8 and 12 people in a square mile. It all depends on whether you could the water and seasonal residents.
