Stocked up on ammunition today before the 11% surcharge that California is adding on July 1st

Stocked up on 9, 45, 357 and 38 special.

I was going to get some 556 until they told me it was $700 for 1,000 rounds! Crazy…

This was at my LGS as I like to support them.

Other than being in the middle of one of the worlds current war zones... or possibly new york city... I can't think of a worse place to be living right now than California............ but thats just me.... im sure other people have other opinions.....

NYS now has a surcharge on ammunition, you have to provide identification so they know who and how much ammunition one is purchasing. I now purchase my ammunition out of state while I am traveling.

In light of supply chain uncertainties, the whims of idiot politicians, wars and rumors of wars and constant inflationary pressures on the economy, it is wise to keep a supply of ammunition on hand. And I mean more than a box or two .22 LR.

Those who don't prepare in advance will be the first affected when, not if, the next ammunition crisis arises.

Personally, I had a good supply until an unfortunate boat accident.

Punitive law to discourage people from owning guns. All part of the plan. Sucks big time for y'all that are victims of this kind of thing.

We did not get to vote on this.

It was just one of the laws signed by Newsome as part of the gun control push. This new tax goes to gun violence prevention programs, or at least that's what they say.

We have a Dem super majority government out here and they just do what they want... (not a political statement. Just a fact)

California does have its problems for sure, but it is a huge state with many different areas and attitudes . Where else could you go from the ocean to skiing in the same day.

I live in a little town on the East edge of the Bay Area. It's an affluent fairly conservative area. I live in the Downtown area of Main Street . It is a Norman Rockwell Americana setting with parades and the like. We also have the county fairgrounds about 3 blocks from my home too. The Alameda county fair starts next week with horse racing too. We have a nice race track with a 9 hole golf course in the middle of it. I actually really like living here.

I've often said that if I could take Main Street and the weather with me I would be out of here.

Like most states the politics are dominated by the big cities. (Again, not a political statement but a fact)

As liberal as some try to make Virginia, I am happy to say that we can still buy our Ammo at Wal-Mart, cash and carry (Sales Tax is 5.3%).

Or have it delivered to our door by UPS. Only thing there is the credit card paper trail.

Although like many states, we know that it could possibly change someday.

CT is very liberal, too, but so am I. So good for me. I'm not worried about rules and regulations and laws that might interrupt the supply chain of ammunition or reloading supplies. Yes. We have strict rules, but I can buy as much ammunition as I want and firearms with no waiting period as long as they're available (the sales tax is the same as if I was buying underwear).

It's the insane panic buying that affects the supplies and prices. And I plead guilty to my own brand of panic buying.

I've told this story before. I bought my very first firearm in early 2014; a Henry Classic 22LR. I was gobsmacked that, at the time, I couldn't buy any ammunition for it. The shelves were empty. Everywhere. I brought the rifle home without any ammo. Today, we all remember that time and which presidential election caused it. My guy won.

Luckily, I discovered an app for my phone that monitored Walmart's incoming inventory of ammunition (it has since been disabled by Walmart) and, every morning, I would check it, then drive 20 minutes to the store nearest to me. Walmart had a limit of three boxes per person, but the quantity in the boxes was irrelevant. A box of fifty or a box of five hundred were considered the same. With that app's information, I bought as much as I could, as often as I could, for the next year. The supply chain was still sparse and 3 box limits were still in place when I eventually stopped. I currently have about 8K of 22LR ammunition that cost me an average of eight cents per round, and I've fired an additional 2K over the years.

I also reload for 38/357 calibers. My average cost per .357 round ranges from 16 to 22 cents each depending on the bullet and powder, and I have enough components to last the rest of my quickly fading life.

I'm glad I bought as much 22LR as I did back then and I'm really glad I reload.

Colorado is following the path that California has established. This November there will be a bill on the ballot that will impose an excise tax on ammunition. I havent seen the wording of the bill yet to know if it covers reloading components. Hopefully it gets defeated like it should because the proceeds from the excise tax will not be used what they say it will be used for. Its smoke and mirrors again just to restrict our rights
