Frontier percussion .50 cal

Post by RanchRoper » Tue Jun 04, 2024 9:19 pm

Shot my Frontier caplock last night, there is a 12" round blue steel plate on our range that sits on a hill 125 yards out. It's one of 2 favorite targets of mine at the club. The other is a big wooden buffalo with a red steel heart hanging in the middle of it. Very very windy, 50+ mph. Not my favorite weather for shooting but I think it's good to know how to shoot in real world conditions, hence another reason I shoot year round in all weather. I shot some of the 50-75 yd steel gongs for a bit and then went after the little blue plate. It took me 3 or 4 shots to hit it but then I nailed it 5 times in a row. What I am trying to do is learn to read the grass when the wind is gusting. Not easy to do but worth the effort if you can get on to it. Might sound weird but it worked for me to get the windage figured out. I think some of those hits were MLB worthy curve balls!

Anyhow, I had the blue plate special for supper. :)

We have a fair sized Buffalo hanging at 100 yards at our club which is the longest target we have. There is also a round and a square plate hanging on the stand. I always try to at least hit those targets when I go. I can usually hit them once but Ive not been able to do it 5 times in a row. Shooting the same rifle all the time has total advantages over some of the rest of us. Plus your skill is far beyond mine. Im not a guy who has the will power to stay with just one gun. If I did stay with one I might be a better shot and I might not have so much gun related items in my toy room. Something I have always admired about RR he is able to limit his guns to just one.

“I think some of those hits were MLB worthy curve balls!”

Wouldn’t it be great if somehow you could use one of those “tracers or trackers” they use to track pitches movement. Between the drop and the wind curve it would be amazing to see the track of your projectile.

I really admire the way you get out and shoot no matter what the weather and I understand why you do it. For me, it was back in the days when I was hunting and the need to shoot in all kinds of weather. It's also very historic, of course, especially with shooting in the wind. That dates back in time to when the frontier expanded out on to the grasslands and shooting meant dealing with the wind. I grew up mostly in the Dakotas and Nebraska and the wind never stops blowing out there. You'd fit right in with the plainsmen of the frontier era.

Thanks! The winter frozen finger shoots are not as much fun anymore but use it or lose it I guess.

I’m going to optimistically conclude that the “lose it” you mention is NOT that frozen finger.
