Road trip Charlotte Nc. To Mesa Az.
Love of my life and I have spent our longest road trip together. We usually fly to any destination requiring 12 hours or more road time. This year for our youngest grandson’s high school graduation we chose to drive. Here we are in Mesa and she hasn’t smothered me with a pillow yet. We planned this trip out as close as possible to 8 hour stops. And were able to get some military base lodging reservations. Left home afternoon May 16 with overnight stop in Knoxville Tn. Next stop Millington Tn. Navy Lodge. Memphis Tennessee has the record for worst roads and drivers. Long day on bad to mediocre highway from Memphis to Oklahoma City. Back on the road again to next stop at Kirkland AFB Albuquerque. Very nice Roadrunner inn. Day five road through Navajo nation up to Page Az. Took a 2 night break to sight see. Visits to Antelope Canyon and Zion National Park. May 22 back on the road south through Sedona to Mesa. Nice to be off the road for a few days back on the road home on Monday.
Elvis was not in the building so we just took a selfie at the gate.

Thanks for sharing. Good pics.

I’m exhausted just reading about your trip. Looks like grandson is nearly as tall as grandpa and will most likely look down on you in a year or so.
Arizona is an amazing state, so much to see.

Grandson is definitely long and lean he is going to enlist in the Marine Corps this year. He should go to basic in Camp Pendleton in California. But Grandma and I are secretly hoping he goes to Parris Island in South Carolina. That picture of him standing between the old guy and the woman. That old guy is my son the woman is the stepmother.
Big Al the bread is really good with a bit of honey on it. But you gotta eat it while it is hot. Letting it get cold it gets chewy.

Back on the road in the morning. Had a great visit with the grand babies. They grow up too fast.
Stops planned in Gallup NM. Almagordo NM. (White Sands). Amarillo TX. Little Rock Ar. Tulahoma TN. Six days on the road ……….I think there might be a country song in there somewhere.
If you don’t hear from me in a few days it may be possible that my wife found a thick enough pillow.

It was much better than expected. With just an hour in the canyon I did think it would be worth the price. I was definitely wrong. The guide was great helping with camera settings and composition. He even took photos for everyone in places where there was no way we would get a good selfie. If we go back we will do the lower.

truly outstanding .... that's a beautiful part of the country that we'd love to revisit but with the passage of time that's unlikely .... y'all have new memories to add to those that last a lifetime

I added places we have stopped and really liked. The Big Texan is uniqueRetiredSeabee wrote: ↑Mon May 27, 2024 1:15 amStops planned in:
Gallup, NM. (Petrified Forest, Painted Desert).
Alamogordo, NM. (White Sands), (Space Museum).
Amarillo, TX. (Big Texan Campground and Steak House).
Oklahoma City. (Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum). (45th Infantry Museum).
Little Rock Ar. Tullahoma TN.
and sometimes there can be a wait, but it is an adventure. The Cowboy Hall of Fame
is really an art museum with many priceless paintings as well as a lot of western
artifacts and displays. Take a whole day there. The 45th Infantry has all of Bill Mauldin's cartoons. (Willie and Joe).

We would have loved to spend an extra day in each location. Just an overnight and back on the road next morning. We did make a quick pit stop at the Big Texan. And went through the
Painted Desert/ Petrified Forest yesterday. And hit White Sands this afternoon.
Stood on the corner in Winslow yesterday as well. Squeezing in what we can in what time we have.
