Hi folks, first post, sorry but .357 HO12GMR misfires 100%

Post by Richd » Wed Jan 24, 2024 1:45 pm

Hi all,

Sorry for a negative first post. I recently bought the carbine.357
at a great price new. Really like this gun, I also have a Marlin SBL
carbine in .44 and a Rossi in .454.
I wanted a lighter caliber to match up with my .357 for woods
carry, I have a lot of black bear and moose at my vacation property in NH of over 140 acres. I’m getting a bit older and want to move to
less recoil and weight though the .44 Marlin ain’t bad but lugging a 4” smith on my hip ain’t in .44 mag.
Anyway my new Henry stopped working, was gonna chrono some buffalo bore and underwood the other day and… click.
Waited for a bit, ejected round and not even a dimple on primer.
Tried again, click. Tried ammo I shot week before, click. Not even a dimple.
No warning of a failure, I’m thinking it’s gotta be the firing pin.
Called Henry, they’re sending a shipping label, hopefully here tomorrow.
Not thrilled about that, I asked for a firing pin, though I admit I haven’t confirmed it’s broken, but removing the bolt and pressing the pin and the disconnect thing in the bolt I could not see
the pin protruding.
What’s not feeling right is they deem the firing pin a restricted part
and won’t ship out replacement or spares. Never had that with many other gun makers with broken firing pins happening.
I saw a thread here with something similar but it wasn’t followed up
by the poster on how it got resolved.
Honestly I have no choice but to give Henry a chance but
shipping the whole rifle is a pain.

I agree on the shipping it back being a PITA, but that's Henry.
Replacing the firing is no big undertaking, have done it on a Marlin before and Henry's bolt is a copy of the marlin.
Probably a 10-15 minute job tops.
Sucks having to send a brand new rifle back already.
You might as well just do as they say.

Welcome from central W TN, hope they get you fixed up in short order.

Hey Richd, welcome from Nebraska. Sorry you ran into trouble. My 357 is my favorite. Good luck with the repairs. Hope it's not long.
Remember, it's not how many guns you have. It's how many bullets you have.

ImageThanks folks! I’m more taken aback by a firing pin being a restricted part than anything else.

Tried posting a picture can’t figure out how maybe too new yet here. I’ve made changes already, cut the LOP to my liking and removed the rubber sticky butt pad( they always hang up on my shirt or jacket). I put a Leopold delta point pro in a low profile mount ( had the sight sitting around not my first choice) and a rail adapter for a light. Everything was coming together then click 😂
A buddy says I should test guns, I have bad luck with stuff like this lol.

Hope things work out soon! At least, you have a Marlin and Rossi to fall back on.

Welcome to the Henry forum. I had an issue with a new 357 carbine and Henry had it back in my hands in a week. I wasn't happy about the problem but they made it right quickly. Hope they get your rifle fixed to your just as fast.

Must be recommended by their legal team to have Henry do the repair for safety reasons. Haven't had that issue yet with my 357 Henry.

So I called and also filled out repair ticket first thing Monday morning. The lady said they would get a shipping label to me in 48hrs.
Nothing yet, USPS informed email ( It comes early every day telling you what is coming today) shows nothing. Henry not open yet but going to call again today. I saw a video on YouTube yesterday, a guy with a .44 brass receiver rifle had misfires. Took him 3 returns before it got fixed. I don’t know if he’s the poster in the other thread or not. He was finally happy. Hoping for same. Maybe Henry reads in here.

Henry will fix you up. This happens way to frequently anymore. I agree with the PITA sending one back but its happened to me 3 times. I had to send one back twice before it was right. Hopefully the turn around time will be quick. Welcome to the forum. Let us know how it all turns out

So sorry to hear about the issue with your new rifle.
I also had an issue with my .45-70 years ago. I also had to send it back but the good news was, I had it back within 10 days with a new barrel and mag tube. Henry also replaced my buttstock which had a ding in it of my doing.
I hope like many on this forum, you will find Henry customer service to be some of the best out there.
Years ago I had a re-call on one of my Remington shotguns. I had to send it to Remington and I never got it back for 6 months.

You will notice that these Henry .357's have practically no felt recoil.

Wanted to update, Henry sent the label via email on Monday! It went to junk folder, cleared it up by calling them today. I’m feeling better now about them wanted to clear the air. Will keep you all posted.

Let us know how it goes. I have that same Henry, I did not have any problems with it.

UPS link says it will arrive at Henry next Wednesday. When you folks have sent your rifles back, did they provide you an explanation of what was wrong? I’ve had S&W just fix a gun and return it with no explanation. Hopefully Henry is better.

With the many times I have sent a Henry back they have just told me what they replaced not what was wrong with it. UPS is getting slow. Henry used to get it in one or two days. One time I received my rifle back 5 days after sending it.

Lol, that’s not encouraging to me! I hope this gun doesn’t get me on a first name basis with customer service like I was with Keltec and now defunct MSAR years ago. Very nice folks too, tho I turned down thanksgiving and Christmas dinner invites from them as we got to know each other 😂😂. Many years ago I worked for a large computer corporation (DEC)and the product I was responsible for developing had an issue we didn’t catch. Me and my lead engineer flew out to one of our biggest customers (Reuters) to fix it and apologize profusely . The VP was happy and satisfied and said I like both you guys but I never want to see you again! Message received. The best customer service is the one not needed…. Maytag repair man if you will….

Just a quick update, per UPS the rifle arrived at Henry last Wednesday. I called on Friday, the lady said 7-10 business days for them to get to it.
