Safety, Sun, and Reading Glasses

I wore glasses before cataract surgery but will no longer need glasses for distance. Since eye and ear protection is required for shooting I must get some safety glasses. I want high quality glasses and not the cheap plastic ones that scratch easily. Any recommendations?

I still must wear prescription glasses after having my cataracts taken care of. I would wait a couple of months before I would spend any real money on the safety glasses. Just wear the Cheapo plastics for a while . . .

Best thing about cheapos is they are cheapos. Scratch, leave behind, drop, it’s no big loss.

I keep them in socks in the range bags.

My surgery went so well your post seems to be in a large font. Seriously in the last six hours most of the cloudiness went away and I can see what I believe to be 20/20.

Decades ago I wore contacts and needed reading glasses. I would buy the cheap over the counter readers for out and about but also had a good pair for business. I’ll also get a pair of no-line bifocal sunglasses. They will be made optical for driving. I already have several pairs of expensive frames and will only need the lens.

I do want one pair of good shooting safety glasses with no-line bifocals.

Hi Gene. I'd suggest going to an optometrist for high quality glasses that fit properly. There are tons of safety supply places that'll have dozens and dozens of choices, but just about 99% are polycarbonate, scratch easily, and are meant to be semi-disposable. The fit matters for things like shotgunning, where you'll find yourself either looking through the top of the frame, or over it, which offers no protection. And if they're not comfortable and stay on your face, you won't use them.

I like some of those. Im going to see what the Vision Center of Wisconsin has first. If they don’t have what I want I’ll buy from the link. I have several expensive frames I can use and just buy lens.

I found some good American Optical safety glasses on eBay. These are from the 60’s-70’s and are real glass. I saw the same frames at the Vision Center of Wisconsin and with the same safety and bifold lens would have been $700.

These are new Ray-Ban sunglasses that I bought and run about $200 new. These have the Ray-Ban lens and not the older Bausch and Lomb glass. I believe B&L to be a better glass or in this case a better glass rather than poly. For those that have worn glasses for as many decades as I have knows glass is much heavier although don’t scratch nearly as easy.

I’m still searching for more glasses as I also need computer readers or inside readers.

After seeing this thread, I looked for glass safety glasses. On Amazon and Ebay, choices were almost non existant.
I had no line bifocal RayBans before cataracts surgery. I paid hundreds for them and loved them. I can't use them now and will end up donating them to the eye doctors. Instead of getting more Ray Ban sunglasses, I get a pair of Stihl sun / safety glasses at the John Deere dealer front counter every spring. I don't wear sunglasses often, so I don't lose them and don't scratch them much. I do wear them when on the water for fishing.
I only need reading glasses for small print. I usually get five or six at a time on Amazon in 1.5 or 1.75 power. I put a pair everywhere I might need them. I also carry a pair with me when at my part time jobs. I would like a pair of plain glass safety glasses for shooting. I don't seem to loose the pair I have had for decades. I'm still looking for something decent.

I prefer high quality glasses. These bullet glasses are very expensive and I’ll keep shopping and bidding until one falls through the cracks and sells for cheap. It might take me six months and a hundred hours get find the deal.

I found these safety glasses on eBay. They are high quality glass and don’t scratch easily. The downside is they weight a ton.

They are clear on top and then have 2.5 power readers on the bottom.

I took my old frames and had new prescription glasses made. I can see 20/20 distance although can see better with a slight correction. I now need reading glasses and have two prescriptions one at +3 and one at +1.5.

Top left American Optics Z87 safety glasses, top right Ray-Ban Bullet-hole Aviators,
Middle left everyday dress Powells, computer Silhouettes and causal Ray-Bans,
Bottom Ray-Ban Clubhouse and American Optics Saratogas.

The sun glasses are all standard lenses and the four clear glasses are prescription. I replaced the lens in the Z87’s with poly safety and my prescription. The computer glasses have the reading portion for almost the entire height. If I need to see far I tilt my head down to see out of the very top. The Saratogas are the sunglasses JFK wore.

The safety and dress glasses are no-line +1.5 readers and the other two are +3.

I had a set of those Ray-Ban glasses years ago, mine were yellow lenses too. Tried them for trap shooting, but with how I mounted the shotgun, I was either looking over the top of the frame, or through it, so I didn't use them. Tried them for Bullseye pistol, and the yellow tint helped a lot, but for whatever reason I stopped using them. I have no idea whatever happened to them, and at the prices that you posted, I sure wish I knew where they were now. YIKES, those got expensive.
