Just My Luck

Post by BrokenolMarine » Thu Dec 28, 2023 11:52 pm

Wanted to add a braided Beaded lace to the quilted sheath I made for the new knife I just finished for an accent. I was sure I had the silver barrel beads in my supplies, but I was wrong. Hobby Lobby was having a big sale, and Miss T had already been once. I asked if she wanted to ride with me while I picked up some beads for the project. I didn't have to ask twice. ;)

I also wanted to pick up a second dremel tool to use for polishing the metal parts on the knife builds, as Miss T had picked up a flex shaft for me a month or so ago. It's great, works like a champ, but is a pain to put on and take off. :? With a second dremel I could set it up and leave it hanging on the assembly bench. Ended up having to go to Home Depot for that. While we were there, Miss T told me to look at the benchtop drill presses, as I have a LARGE drill press in the shop, but to drill the holes on small projects, like the holes in sheaths or holsters for hand sewing, I have to stand at the big press. With the bench top press I could SIT at the bench and do those. I'd still need the big press to drill hardened steel, or drill things clamped to the drill press and drilled at high speed with the carbide bits.

Picked up everything on the list, got home and had lunch them went out to the shop to start the set up. I opened the sealed dremel, and ...
... the box had been RE-sealed with hot glue. Inside the box was an old, beat up dremel, a larger older model than the pencil thin model I had purchased. The cord had been cut AT the dremel and stripped back for testing. The cord was cut, stripped, twisted together at the power converter/plug end and taped. It was also cut in two other places. Missing from the box was the accessory packet.

I took the box and receipt back to HD and told the gal in Customer Service I was not happy. They had been the subject of a fraud, and I had been been the victim as well. I tilted the box, and said, "I bought this a couple hours ago, and I don't think it's supposed to look like that."

She looked stunned and told me to go get another box off the shelf and we'd check the new box together before I left. I pocketed my receipt and walked back to the tool section and found another like I had purchased and back to the front. The manager was there looking at my return, and had called the associate who had accepted the return the previous day. I pointed out the line of hot glue on the box, and again pointed out that the accessory pack was missing, and the dremel in the box was the wrong dremel and looked years old.

The associate said, "She looked very suspect, but I had to take the return, she had a receipt." Then, she turned to the manager and said, "She returned TWO Items..." :o They both took off into the store....

The customer service lady opened the box and we checked it together. All was well in dremel world with this one. I told her as long as the Drill Press looked good when I opened it tomorrow, I'm golden.... :)

Not the first time, probably won't be the last.

It's a shame that people who commit frauds and scams don't put an equivalent amount of time into honest work. Some just have to cheat for some perverted reason.

I'm glad Hobby Lobby made you whole.

I bought a scope mount from Amazon a while back. When it showed up it was zip tied to the cardboard, not in a blister pack like the previous one I bought. Then I saw that it was missing a screw, and showed some use. They even tried to sand off the logo since it was a different brand. The employee probably doesn’t know anything about scope mounts, so I can’t really fault them for sending it back out. Amazon took it back and sent the right one. It’s just disappointing that some people are so petty to do something like that for just a few dollars.

Very unfortunate. I too have experienced similar situations recently.

Just another case of a person who if they worked as hard to perform a normal job as they do to rip off a person/store etc they could be very successful. I will say that’s pretty clever how the deceit was made.

Pretty sad story, but, yeah, it happens. I worked in retail several times in my career and saw similar things.

I’ve returned things over the years and found the return department always checks to make sure everything is there so I find it hard to believe a store doesn’t know. If I’m buying something I always check to make sure it has a factory seal.

Sounds like the hot glue made it appear to be factory sealed, and return clerk decided not to break that seal to check. She likely learned a lesson.

I just came back from UPSing back a pair of Ariat boots that were just what I wanted, except the inner seams were so course they rubbed sores on my ankles. They were not cheap boots either. I am disappointed that Arait would let something like that come on the market.
I purchased them direct from Ariat online but never again. I'm not buying any boots I can't try on first.

cooperhawk -

I never buy hats, gloves or footwear if I can't try it on. If I buy it online, it seems to always be the wrong size.

Actually, I seldom buy clothing now-a-days. I have more than enough "nice" clothing left over from my work days to attend church on Sunday and lots of old cloths for chores and recreational activities. I occasionally buy shoes because they do wear out.

I don't discard clothing simply because it has aged. My wife says that when I hunt, I look like an armed hobo.

The worst we saw was years ago when SEARS was still an anchor store. This was a WEEK after the Super Bowl that year.

We had to replace our mattress for the master bedroom and decided to replace the TV in the living room, the edges had begun to turn green. We chose a Serta Perfect Sleeper, and the delivery was not going to be cheap since we lived an hour from Sears. Went downstairs to Electronics and after shopping for a while chose a nice 65" flatscreen. They were going to do the same HIGH priced delivery, but after discussing it with the manager, they charged a flat delivery fee since we already paid the out of area fee and they could piggy back the TV on the delivery.

TV arrives a couple days later, we put up the new mount for the larger TV, pull the TV out of the carton and notice that the transparent red trim around the screen is covered in fingerprints. Why, that's odd. Pull out the plastic bag with the directions and the remote...

The remote already has batteries installed. Click, TV comes on and the TV has the local channels and cable favorites programmed in. I am pretty sure I knew what happened, but to be sure, I pull the pedestal base out of the box. Remember, I just mounted this on the wall using the swing/tilt mount. Yup, the pedestal base has scarring where someone had mounted the TV on the base. Someone bought the TV and held a Superbowl Party, then boxed it up and returned it to SEARS, they just put it back out on the floor as new.

I took it back and was NOT happy since we paid for delivery, and now had made two two hour round trips to SEARS to secure a TV. The store manager swapped the TV for a new one in the box and checked it before we left. THAT one was actually new. HE threw in a sears gift card for $50 due to his staff's mistake.
