We have quarries here too. The closest active one is about five miles away. There are numerous old ones all around. I have good tasting water but some just a mile away tastes bad.North Country Gal wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 4:00 pmInteresting difference in the soils for us, even though we are only a couple of counties, away. We are sand with ridges of gravel, all outwash from the glacier melting. It's also why we have so many lakes. If you want clay, you have to bring it in.

Re: Garage and road project
I just walked up the hill and think it’s frozen enough to get a truck up it. I’ll have two loads of 15 yards each of 3/4” minus delivered. Once the driveway is graved I should be able to get a truck up it even when thawed and wet.
I can’t believe I can still work on this when it’s this late in the year.

Grew up drinking municipal water, when our well was drilled I thought it tasted good from day one.
When I was a kid we drove back to North Dakota most Summers and I couldn't drink the water at my Uncle's place, they all thought it was fine.

Re: Garage and road project
I did some work on the road today. The day started at sunrise because the ground is mushy when wet and not frozen.
I sat in the motor home for two hours waiting for the gravel.
The first 15 yards.
The second 15 yards. It was partially frozen and hard to grade.
Four hours of playing on the tractor and the 3/4” minus is spread.
The next loads will be 1” clear.

Looking good Gene. The more you get done now before it's all covered and frozen, the more fun you'll have come spring.

I’ve accomplished far more this year than I thought possible. And with the good weather I’m starting on next spring’s projects.markiver54 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 14, 2023 5:01 pmLooking good Gene. The more you get done now before it's all covered and frozen, the more fun you'll have come spring.
This is the first of three loads of 1” clear I’ll get delivered today. It’s half frozen and comes out in big chunks that are like big rocks. They are very difficult to break up.

The work continues. Here is 5 of the 15 loads of 1” clear that I ordered. The metal garage is only 20% of t HD e cost of this project.

Sir Henry, do you know why this rock is called “clear”? It looks like what around here is called “river rock”.
Re: Garage and road project
Not Sir Henry but clear just means it doesn't have any fines, better for drainage although it won't compact as much as gravel with fines in it.

Nice work. The trouble with me running a dozer is I don't know when to when to quit. My friend has dropped his off here several times for me to use.
Nice looking place you have.

Locals tell me they can’t remember the last time there wasn’t snow for Christmas.
So far I’ve had 154 hours of fun on the tractor. The Happy Kaboomer wrote: ↑Wed Dec 20, 2023 10:03 pmNice work. The trouble with me running a dozer is I don't know when to when to quit. My friend has dropped his off here several times for me to use.

This is what 225 yards of 1” clear looks like. I will spread about 150 yards over a 45x60 foot platform for a 30x50 foot concrete pad. The rest will be spread much thinner behind the garage pad and will cover an area 100x150 feet.

That little tractor has paid for itself. I do as much work as possible and act as the general contractor. I’ve hired five separate sub-contractors and did the design myself.

Now that spring is here I’m starting on this project again. Yesterday the concert man came out to look at the ground where the garage will go.

I had a neighbor level the ground while I was in the hospital. I’m thinking of adding another 30 loads of road building gravel and making the level area even bigger. I’m hoping to pour the concrete by the end of May.

Re: Garage and road project
I just ordered 500 yards of road building gravel. This is the stuff that dries like concrete and doesn’t easily absorb water making it great to drive on.

Re: Garage and road project
It’s raining and very muddy but they decided to send a truck out to test the road.
We lucked out and he didn’t get stuck.
But it was close as he sunk in almost up to the axels.
I’ll have a total of 35 loads of 15 yards.
