interesting article, thanks for posting it .... the only area where I take exception to the assessments given are shown in bold print taken ::

"Depending on the ammunition fired, felt recoil starts at stout (cowboy loads) and quickly moves up to intense levels (magnum loads) that will leave you feeling sore the next day if several rounds are fired in the course of a shooting session."

given, recoil tolerance is subjective and varies widely from person to person .... I've found HSM Cowboy Action loads to be fun to shoot .... to me their recoil is such that I usually carry 50 to 100 rounds to the range .... magnum level loads most certainly deliver a noticeable kick .... I've fired hot loads from a light bolt action 30-06 and rifle slugs from a pump shotgun that hurt worse ....

I enjoyed the article too. I've mentioned a few times here that my next centerfire Henry will be a 45-70. Really like the idea of loading my own cartridges to my own specifications/needs.

The guy is a wimp. Cowboy loads are "Stout"? In a gun with a recoil pad? I'll bet he loved the hot Buffalo Bores rounds!

He must normally shoot 22's.

I noticed the same thing as the author of the article wrote regarding Jurrasic World about one of the main characters carrying a stainless Marlin in .45-70. My wife and I just recently watched the movie and I think that was the most appealing part to me.

Thanks for posting that I re red it & do find some areas I disagree with. One has been mentioned the Cowboy loads as being stout. I've shot the equivelant & they are mild, but recoil is different to different folks. I'll give him that. If I had to defend myself aginst something like the diansaur, I'd take a lesson from the PHs in Africa, I'd choose a nice double rifle in something like the .450 Nitro Express, the .470, nitro express, or maybe the .500 nitro express, all with appropriate solids. But that's me, the Marlin does make the movie interesting. I would not use military weapons against something that big no matter how fast they fired.
But that's me, I'm not making movies.

The 45-70 can be loaded for plinking and be fun to shoot like many other calibers. There are powders and bullets out there to get this done. Just because a round like this has the capability of the big recoil doesnt mean you need to load it there to shoot cans with it. Sure it cost a little more to do this but what the heck its fun to see those 405's take out a pop can, clay pigeon, or make a big mark on a steel target. Lots of people own 44 mags and shoot them all the time with reduced loads. I know I do. Al

Years ago before my arthritis and old accident flare ups were not as bad, my Montana husband not my late husband, loaded one of his former, older 45-70 Marlin classic rifles with special loads that he made just for ME. He has reloaded for over 40 years now.

I shot them at our range just to try out a 45-70 rifle. I did not hurt myself and he knew about my physical issues from a horrific fall, broken arm, etc. from my 40's but I could still shoot his rifle and I had no issues.

He has another 45-70 now since he sold that older one. He sold the walnut/stainless steel Guide gun and went back to the Classic one.

He is still eyeing a HENRY in 45-70.

Cate the .45-70 can be loaded so it's very comfortable. I've got a lead bullet 405gr load with IMR3031 that chronographs 1088fps & it's very pleasant.
A bit of unburned powder, but it doesn't interfere with anything.

Thanks Cate Ive had alot of fun with that line. Im always teasing a really close friend of my with that line as he is 3 yrs older than I. I couldnt eye a 45-70 any longer I had to have one. A Henry 45-70 CCH will be here for me on Thursday. I cant wait to handle and see it. Al
